Our cat has been diagnosed with diabetes a month or two ago, and she has lost most function of her back legs. Her neck gets itchy very easily, and she can no longer scratch it. We are giving her medication to help her back legs, but she still isn't able to scratch herself. I feel bad about this. I am also getting a little worried, as today her head is trembling when she gets an itch. How would I be able to help her? How can I relieve the itch?

have you talked to your vet about the itching and the trembling?   the itching could be diabetic neuropathy - i know humans who get that, and they get a burning itch earlier on, a burning later.  there are some human meds for that, so maybe there's something for cats, too.

Her neck has been itchy ever since we got her (8 years ago I think?), so I don't think it is due to her diabetes. The trembling has just started this morning, but have not yet stopped since.

How can I help scratch her itch for her? So it stops for a while? Her problem is she can no longer reach her neck.

Are you givng methyl B12 for the diabetic neutopathy (the hind leg weakness)?

I'm not sure what the itchiness could be. I don't think it's related to the diabetes.  You may want to ask for additional advice on the Feline Diabetes message board. Has your cat always had the itchiness or did it start around the time of the diabetes diagnosis?

The head trembling might be a sign of hypogycemia but it's odd that it only happens when your cat is itchy. Is your cat on insulin? Do you test blood glucose levels at home?

The itch has always been a problem, since we got her. I believe since its getting really dry here, her skin is as well. That might be causing the extra itch. Anyways, the B12 is working miracles, and she actually jumped yesterday. She is almost able to scratch herself today, so I think she will be able to soon. Thank you all for the help! :)
