We took our rescued older lady cat (16 1/2 years old) , to the Vet and had her fur and matts shaved. She was lightly sedated and they did a good job of shaving her fur. Know she is much more comfortable now. We will brush her from now so she doesn't get fur matts again. And if necessary, we will have her shaved when the fur gets too long and thick. Do love this kitty. I appreciate the advice I received on this site. Thank you.
If you use a round-toothed comb, that will remove some of the undercoat before it can mat (when her hair grows back). Also, with many longhairs, they need to be bathed from time to time, because just like us, their hair can get oily and when it does, it tangles. Getting her bathed from time to time and using a round-toothed grooming comb (wider teeth at one end) may avoid all the mats.
