I had placed a post about what I should do when I bring my cat Sammie home from the vet after surgery. Because we have 2 cats an I was afraid of what our other cat might do when Sammie returns..

I got some good advice and was told to try vanilla extract on each cat.

My questions are...When do I put it on after I bring Sammie home? How do I apply it? And how much do I use? And how often do I need to use it.
Thanks so much for reading this any info will be so appreciated

Put it on immediately ( a little goes a long way) and you put a dab on their chins, between their shoulders and at the base of their tails. You put it on all the cats and you do it 3 times a day. The first 24 hours should work.

What exactly does the vanilla extract do?
If it makes them nuzzle each other and not bite and scratch then I am gonna go rub myself down with that stuff!

I've never heard this before! I think I'll try it on Buffy and Willow, see if they stop fighting for once

I am not sure what it does but, when we brought our cat home from the vet we put the vanilla on both pets an there were no flare ups at all. It works beautifully..

When 1 cat goes to the vet, they come home smelling differently. Between the stress, the other animals, the new person, and any medication, the cat that stayed at home doesn't recognize the smell of the sick cat. Vanilla helps to mask those odors and makes both cats smell like each other.

Another trick is to use a towel to transfer smells. Rub the sick cat all over, then rub the at home cat with the same towel.

Would this work with introducing a new cat to an old? A friend of mine has just brought Tofu (a seven month old kitten) home and Wasabi (a ten month old) is going crazy. If you think it might help bring the war to an end, I'll suggest it.

Thanks!

It will work, but you shouldn't put them together too quickly too soon or else there will be a turf war-

Vanilla extract is not a trick - it is also not a good thing to do - I don't know who is recommending this. Vanilla extract contains at least 34% ethyl alchohol - a drop too much can cause alchohol poisoning - liver toxicity etc. Cats should not be drinking alchohol or anything containing it - do not do this. It is not a trick. If you want to calm them down - you are better off rubbing catnip. Never vanilla extract. And watch foods that contain it. Like vanilla ice cream.

The suggestion was to put just a couple of drops between their shoulder blades, etc., not ingest it.  At any rate, this is a 10 year old thread, chances are that very few of the original posters will see this.
