My dryer quit on me yesterday, and since both washer & dryer are old (not sure how old they came with the house) I've decided to replace both with new energy efficient ones.

I want a top loader washing machine, but not sure if I want to get a non-agitator one or not.

And just a regular dryer, nothing fancy.

Any advice?

Our Maytag washer's tub rusted out after decades of use. We replaced it with a Speed Queen and I cannot be any happier with the washer. It probably uses more water than many of the high-efficiency washers, but we're OK with it. The clothes are clean, they are wrung out well in the spin cycle, and they smell like they're clean. We did not get a washer with electronic controls; IMO, it's just something to go bad eventually. Our washer does have an agitator.

The new washer has drastically reduced our dryer's drying time, probably because the clothes are spun drier than in the old Maytag. What used to take an hour to dry now takes about 45 minutes.

Do your research. Check reviews.

We are well pleased with our Speed Queen.

@BBDOLL22  Thanks. I've heard good things about Speed Queen before, but I don't think they are available in Canada.

@Winchester  Thanks for your comments. I'm debating between one with an agitator and a HE one without. Right now I'm leaning towards staying with one with an agitator. Just the few reviews I've seen on the HE non-agitator ones haven't been very positive.  I'm hoping a newer washer will use less electricity, if not less water.

@LTS3  thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

Just to followup, my new washer & dryer are being delivered tomorrow. I ended up going with Kenmore, which is made by Whirlpool, which also makes Maytag now.

I got one with an agitator, but it is not the same type as I have now, as washers now have to be water and energy efficient, per Government regulations. It does have a deep load option, which uses more water, but still less than the older machines.

The dryer is basically the same as my previous one, though it does have an function that will spin every so often after the machine stops to prevent clothes wrinkling.  And the salesman said it will probably dry my clothes faster, simply because the new washer will spin the clothes faster and get more water out of them than my old machine.

I also got the 3-year extended warranty. I never get extended warranties, this one will give me my money back in the form of a store credit if I don't have a service call in the 3 years.
