Hello everyone. I'd just posted on here about 5 months ago for the first time, because my beloved Looney had to be put to sleep because the vet believed he had the dry form of FIP. It's only been 5 months since then, and now here I am... With another one of my babies, stuck with a fever that just wont STAY down. I don't believe it's FIP, Because I was reading and was told that if he was going to get FIP it would've happened back when Looney was sick. So the odds were that the other cat's who were around Looney had fought off the virus. But, 5 months down the road and I feel like I'm reliving my nightmare all over again

My doll Sylvester got sick a few day's ago. We noticed he looked as if he'd lost some weight, so we checked his temp. It was at a high fever of 106! I quickly called out vets to make an appointment and we brought him in on the 6th. My vet knew I was worried, and fearful because of what we went through last time trying to save our other cat. She gave him fluids in his back and put him on an antibiotic called Doxycyline. He takes 3ml twice a day. We started that immediately Thursday. It is now Saturday, and he's still running a fever. But what I'm stumped on is how it keeps jumping down and then slightly climbs back up. Here are my charts for each time we've checked his temp, starting from Thursday and for today.

106F

104F

103.8F

100F

102.5F

104F

101.3F

104.2F

103.8F

101.2F

And then we checked him again just recently and it'd climbed back up to a 103.8.

WHAT IS GOING ON!? :(

He's eating still, peeing and pooping. Poop and urine looks normal, no blood or anything like that. Once the fever drops down to normal levels he acts himself pretty much. Walks  around, alert, and follows me around the house. But once it spikes back up to a fever, he's back to laying down and wanting to sleep. Does anyone have any idea what else it could be? Or am I jumping the gun, and maybe should give the antibiotics longer to take effect? I mean, they seem to be helping right? Considering his fever does break, I just don't understand why it keeps returning. He's eating lots of food, especially during the moment his fever does break he'll eat a LOT. I haven't noticed him drinking water, but I've been force water in his mouth using a syringe every few hour's to try and keep him hydrated.

I keep him in a cool room as well with a fan running, he mostly just sleeps on the bed. Before he got sick he was naturally just a lazy cat as well, loved to curl up in his favorite spots and nap for hour's and hour's on end. So I don't know how long he even could've been sick, since we didn't think about it until we noticed he'd lost some weight. Because his sides looked a little sunken in and when you'd pet him you could feel his spine bone. I'm so afraid of losing this little guy too, that it's been wrecking havoc on my own health. I know this is only day 3 of being on the single antibiotic. I'm just so scared, and can not for the life of me stop worrying. I was awake from 6am on Thursday until 10am THIS morning before I finally slept because the fear and worry has been causing anxiety and keeping me awake. And even then I only slept for about 5 hour's.

Any advice or personal opinions would be great! Also, has anyone else dealt with a fever like this? Where it's jumping around like his is, and how long should I wait to give the antibiotics a chance to really take effect? I would've thought by today that fever would be gone. Thanks for reading my long message.

Came feeding time, he actually jumped up out of bed and came readily for food.

Just like in humans when you're battling an infection, your temp can fluctuate.  Exertion can cause your temp to rise.  Shivering can cause your temp to rise.  I think you need to be a bit more patient and pull back on taking his temp too frequently.  Also, most antibiotics take about 72 hours to see any major results and improvements, so you might need to give it another day. If you still aren't seeing an improvement, then call the vet and discuss other medication options.

Alright, I won't check it but 1-2 times a day then. The vet had just told me to keep monitor of it and make sure he didn't get past 106. Thank you for your reply! I hope he starts to feel better today.

Fever went back down to 101 early this morning and back up this afternoon. Guess he will go back to vets tomorrow. I feel like he's going to die just like Looney. I feel so alone.

It does take a while for antibiotics to work, but it is also possible that an antibiotic may be the wrong one.

Antibiotics are made to boost the immune system and help the body fight off an illness- part of this process can be fever since the body uses fevers as a way to cook the virus or bacteria out. Antibiotics don't work as well on humans and cats that are immune compromised (for example human receiving chemotherapy).

Definitely check with your vet, but if the fever doesn't go too high it can actually be something that is necessary to help the cat fight off whatever it has.

I just hope he can get through whatever this is. It's killing me too. My anxiety causes my brain to jump to thinking "this is it. You're going to have to have him put to sleep just like Looney" and I'm beating myself up over it.

Hopefully that won't happen! It is normal to worry over our pets. With luck the antibiotics will work or the vet will be able to come up with some answers and get him on a good course of treatment.

I went through this recently with my female---she's almost 17 and I was terrified because in her case, the vet thought it was a massive infection and if we didn't get her temp down, we'd have to put her down. She was on 3 different antibiotics and she was able to fight whatever it was off. Her temp was at 105F,  Now, remember a cat's regular temp is around 100-101F, so that's not as high as it sounds, but it is DEF a cause for concern. However, if your cat jumped off the bed to eat, that's a GOOD sign. My girl could barely hold her head up. She , as it turns out, had severe pancreatitis likely caused by a bacteria since it responded to antibiotics.

Make sure your kitty is hydrated---with a fever like that, you may need sub q fluids to help kitty feel better, but it sounds like he/she is doing well!

Gosh, do I know how you feel. My anxiety was so bad with both my kitties being sick (brother and sister littermates) I lost 10 pds due to worry. It's ok, I can use it, but the feeling is like someone punching you in the gut, full of worry 24/7.

Signs that are good to see is appetite, bright eyed, interacting or wanting to be with you etc. Red flags would be vomiting, diarrhea, hiding, not wanting to eat etc.

I'm glad to hear your kitty is well and okay now. If you don't mind me asking, did you go through trial and error with any antibiotics? Did you try only one and it wasn't working or did the vet put her on multiple to begin with? Also, how long was she sick and unwell before she finally got better?

Also, did her fever go up and down too? From normal and back up to a fever? or did she stay at a constant fever? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just so worried and scared. I would call his vet today and ask her questions, but their closed on Sunday's.

Her fever went to about 104/105 and we stopped taking it because she was not happy with the thermometer in the location it was (thermometer was dying battery wise as it was off hours on a holiday long weekend but the vet clinic owner was in to care for other animals and told me to come in. Love, love, love my vet clinic!). He gave Convena I think (injectible antibiotic) then round blue pill antibiotics and the oval pink (one only). Not sure which worked, but she broke the fever in 5 hrs, but then fever was below normal which was typical for pancreatitis.

My male cat was sick for almost 2 months with pancreatitis and, while he had no fever, he was lethargic, hiding, wouldn't eat and I was exactly the same. Start keeping a journal and marking down temps, eating patterns, water consumption etc. This kept me sane because I could look at the times he was one way, but then he got better. Both kitties are doing GREAT now-----it's just the most stressful time of your life. I have anxiety issues in general and this just made me a shaking , nervous wreck. However, since I work in the animal industry, many people--if not everyone--was totally wonderful and understood.

Hugs to you!!!

Hello zombieKitten, I would like to know how your kitty is doing and what all happened. I am going thru something very much alike with my 6 month old female kitten and I just can't stand the idea I might loose her. My kitten started acting lethargic, lost appetite and had a high fever when I took her to the vet 3 days ago. She was hospitalized for 2 days because the fever would not break. It did with steroids and now I had to take her to the emergency clinic because she's running a high fever again which fluctuates also as does with your kitten. They gave a her a different antibiotic a few hours ago. She did eat a little more, but she still depressed. I don't know what will happen but seems like it's not a good picture.[emoji]128532[/emoji]
