Hi all, needing a little bit of advice and support plz..... I have just had my 18 week old kitten neutered today and hes got a collar on and hates it but i feel incredibly guilty now for having him done so soon. My sister has waited until after ive took him to have it done an brought him home today to tell me she thinks it was far too young and im cruel!! Am i because i have sat for an hour upset out of guilt because I didnt mean to be cruel the vet had said to do it around now so he didnt start maturing an hormones started an his spraying began but i feel so awful now!! I know its too late an its done now anyway but have i been cruel? Should i have waited? X

No,  You did exactly as you should have done, and could have done it sooner.  5 lbs OR 8 weeks is fine.  And some say 2lbs or 8 weeks.  If the hormones never kick in you actually avoid some things, like spraying (which can become a habit and continue even after neutering).  It is not cruel.  It is necessary, and the sooner, the better.

Your sister is projecting her own thoughts about how she might feel as a human onto the kitten.  He won't know anything happened to him in another day or two, believe me.  Tell you sister to stop projecting.  Goodness, I'd expect a reaction like that from a BROTHER, not a sister!  Your baby boy is JUST FINE!

Thank you so much @Mamanyt for your very reassuring reply. I know i have done the right thing as even since my post hes brightened up, not slept an been roaming an playing. He hated the collar so ive took it off him an in the half hour hes had it off hes not touched the area except once an has eaten a little more food as he was ravenous an kept going to the bag i keep it in! I feel better now for your reassuring reply so thank you very much xx

My boy didn't have a collar after he was neutered.  The vet told me to put one on if he started licking the area a lot and he didn't.

18 weeks is fine.  Neutering is a minimally invasive procedure and there are rarely complications.

He has had a bit of a lick on that area but its hard to tell as its right by his anus so cant actually tell where exactly it is hes licking but weve told him no an he stopped. I may be wrong but was sat thinking if hes got the collar on then he cant groom himself after going the toilet so in many ways may cause more chsnce of infection than him licking it clean!! As for in himself hes full of energy lol which is so good to see! Hes on a role not slept since 3pm!! Xx

A little is fine and is natural, as long as he isn't constantly cleaning that area.
