Good evening,

I know that this might sound ridiculous but my black girl is finishing up on her canned and dry kitten food. She is a year old now. What i would like to know is does the gradual introduction have to be done still even if the kitten and adult food dry are both purina? Her kitten food is Purina Kitten and her adult food is Purina Adult Complete or does the gradual intro for kitten dry to adult dry still have to be done?

I'd say yes. The formulas are still different, and so you should give a gradual transition to avoid potential tummy troubles when switching dry foods. Canned foods are fine to change freely though, from what I understand.

The reason why I ask is because she gets picky one time this month I tried a gradual process with her and she was fine with the 3/4 1/4 mixture but when I got to 1/2 and 1/2 she stopped eating and went on a hunger strike what do I do if that happens again

It's possible she just doesn't like the taste of the Purina adult food, or perhaps something was off about the bag. You may need to try different flavours or brands of food to find something she finds more palatable.

A gradual switch with kibble is the only way to be sure of avoiding an upset tummy. It's just fine to give a little of the new kibble on it's own for taste testing purposes though, or even offer the kibbles in separate bowls rather than mixed together.

Your best bet is to get hold of some sample bags - some big pet stores have them, or you can contact the manufacturer and ask if they do samples. The worst they can do is say no, but in my experience most companies will either send you some samples (either free or for a small fee), or will send you a coupon or two. Particularly if you have a fussy eater, this really is the best way to try out new foods. I've done this a lot in the past, and have saved myself a bunch of money (and wasted food) in the process ;)

Are these 3 oz cans or 6oz cans? My cats eat both wet and dry as well. They each get 1/4 cup of dry food a day and 3oz of wet food a day. Also what kind of wet food is it? The number of calories matters more than number of cans.

I feed Fancy Feast as well. I think that schedule sounds good as long as she isn't a very big cat. Larger cats would need a bit more, but for a cat around 10 pounds that'd be good. What kind of dry food is the dry?

You can probably lower the amount of dry you feed her. Purina Adult complete has around 412 calories per cup. One can of Fancy Feast has between 70-100 calories (depends on flavor). Most adult cats of average size (10 pounds) need somewhere around 200 calories in a day. You can weigh her every few weeks to see if she is gaining too much or losing weight.

My girl is also just over 1 year old.  She really has rarely refused any kind of food.  She prefers kibble but I transitioned her to 1 can a day at 9 months.  She eats just about an entire 3oz can for one of her meals, and then gets kibble for the other meal.  She has an interesting amount of self-restraint; she rarely overindulges except for the one time I made a rookie mistake.  I purchased some "good tasting junk," as I later discovered.  She ate the entire 5.5oz can and regurgitated it on my bathtub floor 15 minutes later.

So her routine these days is two meals (during my waking hours); a 3oz can and 1/3 if a cup if kibble.  Whatever is in her bowl after I have gone to be is gone by morning.  She grazes overnight. She is a small to medium size tabby.
