I have a 3 year old cat named Michael. He's more adventurous and fearless than I'd like him to be but is a good boy anyways. All weekend he was acting weird, he wasn't using his litter box and was acting very lazy. On Tuesday we took him to the vet and they took a urine sample. I was sobbing too hard to get a lot of details, but she said his kidneys were in trouble and he had an upper respiratory infection. She gave us baytril for the infection and told us to keep him inside. He's also FIV positive, which i forgot to mention. She told us to give him 2 days and see if he improves. If he doesn't she recommended we put him down. I love him more than anything and would do absolutely anything for him. It's been 24 hours and he seems better but i can't tell if it's me tricking myself into believing he's better because i want him to be or if he's actually getting better. He's sleeping a little less, but still laying around and won't leave the bathroom floor. He's eating regularly and drinking less than the full bowls he had been before, which i guess is a good thing. He also played with me for a few minutes earlier before he lost interest and went back to grooming himself. His eyes are also looking better, the URI was making stuff come out of them and he was also sneezing and when he breathed he sounded congested. He's sneezing less and his breathing sounds better. I guess I just need an unbiased third party to tell me if i should calm down a little bit. I just want more than anything for him to be alright.

Also he's been having diarrhea, which wasn't a problem until after we started giving him the antibiotics, should I be worried about this?

Antibiotics after CAUSE diarrhea, so I wouldn't really be too concerned about that.  If you want, you can give him probiotics along with the antibiotics, just not at the same time.  For instance, if you give the Baytril in the morning and evening, give a probiotic in the afternoon.

It's hard to say if he's getting better, but from your description, it certainly sounds like it to me.

Is he now using the litterbox as well as the other things you mentioned?  And, what did she mean about his kidneys?  Does he have kidney disease, or crystals, or what?  Does he have a UTI as well as a URI?

Anyway, from what you are describing, he does sound better.  And URI's DO take awhile, so I'm not surprised he's not himself yet, but maybe he's even better now, since it's been an additional few days since you posted.
