So I know it's best to keep fish flavored food limited for health reasons, but what is the recommendations for beef flavored?  I've read that poultry is healthiest but one of the flavors in my cats wet food brand is Beef.  Is it safe to keep in a regular rotation with the poultry or should that be limited as well?  On a side note- out of curiosity, what is everyones cats favorite flavors?

I'm not sure what kind of diet you have for your furry friend but my Gatsby is on a raw grain free diet. I wanted food for him that would closely resemble the food he would eat if he was a wild kitten.

I feed him Natures Variety Instincts Ultimate protein in Chicken. They do have other meats like lamb and turkey or rabbit but I haven't seen an actual beef one.

I don't think fish is any of these foods which is good since I've read that a fish based diet isn't all that great for your kitten/ cat.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding beef - it's one of the go-to protein options for novel protein diets (used in conditions like IBD and other chronic gastric issues). The only problem with beef is that some cats simply find it too rich - I know my girl can only handle small amounts of it without getting diarrhoea (sorry for TMI ;) ).

As far as favourite flavours goes, my girl adores pheasant, pork, lamb, kangaroo, and almost anything fishy - especially shellfish. My boy loves turkey, chicken and fish - especially tuna or mackerel! Fish is limited here too, but they both love it too much for me to never feed it! :yummy:

I would note, though, that some fish flavoured cat foods don't actually contain a lot of fish - in my experience, they're usually mostly meat/poultry with a little fish added in ;) There's more information about fish flavoured food in this article:-

hellogatsby- I feed her a 50/50 mix of wet and dry (both grain-free).  Currently using Nutro Kitten chicken flavor for wet, and Whole Earth farms kitten chicken for dry but getting ready to switch to adult food soon after she gets spayed in a few weeks and will start introducing some new flavors (they're pretty limited with kitten food).

Columbine-Thank you, I will try the beef out with her.  I would plan on rotating it in between the chicken, turkey, and duck flavored wet food from Whole Earth Farms, and maybe the very occasional salmon as a treat.    Kangaroo flavored food?? Are you from Australia?  We certainly don't have that option here in the U.S., lol. In fact, it doesn't seem like many brands over here offer lamb, pork, or pheasant either.

No, I'm in the UK. I buy a lot of my cat food online, and the site I use has all kinds of crazy flavours available! Whilst Kangaroo is a firm favourite, Reindeer did NOT go down well :lol3:

There are some US brands of canned cat food with very exotic proteins
These are the higher end brands sold only at independent pet stores. Wild Calling has alligator, buffalo, lamb/chicken/salmon, among other more common proteins like rabbit and chicken. Nature's Variety Instinct used to have a pork canned food but discontinued it. They do have lamb. Hounds and Gatos has pork and lamb. Addiction has bushtail, eel, and buffalo. Ziwi Peak has lamb. Evangers used to have a pheasant canned food but it was only a supplement / treat type food. Koha (previously Mauri) has kangaroo and guinea fowl canned foods.

A more affordable and more widely available brand is Purina Muse which has a pheasant canned food.

There's a whole thread here on TCS about novel / exotic proteins if you want more suggestions
