Charleston has set up specific evacuation routes based on where people live and changed the lanes on several highways.  They did it to try to avoid completely clogging up the main interstate.

We both are well familiar with and remember the bad hurricanes from the 50's when I was a kid. Hurricane Hazel was a particularly bad one.
I remember Hazel, too, and we were at the north end of the Chesapeake Bay. We lost our power and in the worst of it, it seemed like the wind was whipping through the house. We had a gas stove, though, so mother was able to cook. We did use candles. All the battery-powered things we have today are great, but we didn't have those back then. A flashlight, maybe, but that's all.

I saw the reversed lanes on a major interstate somewhere in Florida or Georgia. It doubled the amount of cars that could get out at reasonable speed. It's a really good idea. When we lost power for over two weeks in Atlanta due to an ice storm, many people left for friends and relatives in neighboring states. I hope the refugees from Matthew can do the same, especially if the hotels are filling up.

Hotel availability all over the state are getting harder and harder to find.
You are so right. I've been on the phone all morning and there's nothing, nada, ZIP, not even as far as Tifton, Georgia!

I guess we'll all hunker down and make the best of it.

Wishing and praying for all who are in the path of Matthew!!

A friend of mine is near Orlando.. kind of a direct hit with the eye... and it is a huge eye of the storm.. waiting for updates from him and his family....

Of course, it's calm in the eye of the storm. Gives you a chance to run out and board another window before the other side of the hurricane hits...in the reverse direction.

I remember Hazel. I was about 5 years old and I went outside to get my bike and the wind was so strong I could not get back inside on my own. My mother realized I was not in the house and she ran outside to get me. I was scared to death. We lived about 150 miles from the ocean. We lived in Maryland. I still live in Maryland but we are not expected to get hit my Mathew.

It looks like Florida may be in big trouble. IF we have any Floridians, I hope all of you stay safe. Right now according to the models, it looks like this hurricane is not going to come ashore where I live.

When I got home from work today, I took all of my wind chimes on the porch down, & brought some things in. I also went ahead & cut most of the zinnia blooms I had in my garden.

I also stopped at Pet Smart to pick up some calming treats for Sammy. Since he is still indoor/ outdoor, he will probably not be happy about having to stay in for about three days & nights.

One day last week it was raining, so I tried to keep him in, & he was meowing, & pawing at the glass door so much, that when it finally slowed down, I let him out. I hope they work! Or it's gonna be a LONG three days!!

I am plenty stocked up on batteries, food, etc..

As it looks so far, we are just going to get a lot of heavy rain & strong winds. Clearing out sometime on Sunday.  Hopefully it will stay that way!

Here are all the flowers I cut today!
This one is in my room

These were mostly from one that was almost on the ground, so the flowers were growing up, so they curved at the top of the stem, so I put them way up on the bathroom cabinet so you can see them, since they are facing down.

Here's the latest tracker from Weather Underground. It looks like it will go along the coast north of here. We are in the hotel in Orlando now

There was some talk earlier that it would come ashore at Wilmington, which is where Hurricane Fran came ashore, got on the Cape Fear River, and right up though my neck of the woods near Raleigh. Looks like we will be spared this time, but I know people in Florida who are NOT evacuating even though there is mandatory evacuation. I just don't understand that one, better to be safe than wish you had left.

I hope all you TCSers who live in the sunshine state are safe!

They were saying this morning that it was possible that it could go out to sea off North Carolina, make a u-turn and come back over south Florida.  I don't remember the name of the storm but there was one like this that did do this.  It would be a much weaker storm the second time through.  It would also go across south Florida rather than come up  the coast again.

The dog is being good in her crate. The cats are in the playpen- unhappy. No one is happy. We all wish were at home.

@Kat0121- At least you and the kitties are safe for now. They will just have to adjust. You will be home soon enough. We will be thinking about you.

Thanks. They will. Lily is using the (clean) litter box as a nest. I put another unused box with a clean towel in it in the playpen but she's stubborn. I hope they don't sleep in the litter and relieve themselves on the towel. I'll have to overtip the housekeeper.

I hope everyone in the path of Matthew will be ok. Hubby just found out that his friend in Palm Beach, Florida was not able to evacuate. They have fur kids and did not realize that Matthew had been upgraded until it was to late to leave,
