Took my newest baby to get spayed last Friday at a low cost litter control center and it turns out she was only born with her right kidney and right horn/ovary. The vet performing the surgery said to let her regular vet know (don't have one yet since we just rescued her about a month ago) and it shouldn't cause any problems while she's young but may when she's older. Has anyone ever had experience with raising a cat with this condition? We want to make sure she has the best and longest life possible! It also got me thinking if revolution flea treatment is safe for her. I didn't think to ask at the time but I was thinking and the first time and only time we've given it to her she got sick and now I'm wondering if it's because she only has one kidney. I know revolution is strong and it's about time for another treatment but I don't think I'll be able to get her a check up before then.

I have heard of this (only one kidney), but i don't know the consequences of flea treatment with only one kidney.  If you can't get her in to see your Vet, can you at least call them and ask.  They shouldn't really need to examine her for that basic question, I wouldn't think.

Thank goodness the body is able to function quite well with one kidney, yes?  Hopefully she'll have no issues EVER with just the one

I am a human doctor, not a vet but in humans single kidneys are not unknown.  The kidney is usually larger than usual to cope with the absence of the other side but there are usually no real problems.  Certainly people so affected are able to have a normal life expectancy.  You should ask your vet about this but I can see no reason why cats should be any different than humans in this respect.

With kind regards,

Geoffrey
