My neighbors' cat is working on her third litter; the first I was told all died, the second was all but one rescued by me when she gave birth and was forced to abandon them underneath my porch, and now she looks pregnant again! The father of the liters is a male cat also owned by the same neighbor.
After the mama cat had fled and abandoned her second litter (which was caused by the Animal Control Officer) we went around the neighborhood to see if she was feral or owned by someone. We found the owner, who had said the they "kicked the cat out" for being pregnant, and that the pregnancy was caused by their other male cat. We asked about spaying and neutering to protect both cats, even offering to take the mama cat into the vet ourselves, to protect her from getting pregnant again. He said he owned the cat, and then said he had to get the "paperwork" together so that he could do it. We talked to the vet and he said he cannot do anything unless we actually own the cat. We cannot call Animal Control because we learned that he is notorious for taking shortcuts with the animals, meaning they usually don't make it to the shelter, and we don't want that.
Now its been almost six weeks (the kittens are doing great in our care) but we see Mama cat still roaming the streets noticeably heavier. Its getting colder out and the neighbor is still claiming its his cat, though not doing anything bout it. I don't want the cat have another litter underneath my porch, especially in the winter. And when if she does that the male cat is right there to impregnate her again!
I want to trap her and get her fixed, then either let her back, or find her a home to live in forever. Legally though I am not sure what I can do, because I don't own her, but something has to be done for that poor sweet cat! Any thoughts?
