If you like to bake and if you ever get a chance to visit the King Arthur store, I really think you should go. It's a great place and we really enjoy our visits. Last year, we took a class in making sticky buns and we had a great time. This year, we made pizza. And again, we really enjoyed the class. The instructors are very knowledgeable and our fellow students are always so nice and friendly. There were more men this time, so Rick felt a bit better, more wives with their husbands than the last time. Rick said he enjoyed this class more so than the sticky bun class.

Each student made two pizzas, so Rick and I ended up with four pizzas (they were smaller than regular pizzeria pizzas, probably about a medium-size). Toppings were just fresh basil chiffonades, fresh mozz and then some shredded mozz. A really nice garlic oil that's sold at the store that we used to brush on the unbaked dough. We used all-purpose flour for the first pizza, then used semolina for the second. Rick's pizzas were really nice; he did a better job than me at shaping. I did better at kneading the dough. But it all worked out in the end and we had some really yummy pizza to snack on. Plus, the semolina recipe actually yielded two crusts, so we split mine and bagged his semolina dough ball, brought it home, and I stuck it in the freezer for later.

I didn't buy much at KA this time around: some of the garlic oil (it's really good stuff! and I'm thinking it would be great spread on naan, focaccia, even baked potatoes, maybe for dipping, all kinds of stuff), a caramel monkey bread mix, and some kind of cheesecake bar mix for Rick. I don't buy a lot of mixes, but the monkey bread caught my eye and Rick loves anything cheesecake, so they found their way into the cart. No flour this time around, since I had bought 10 bags at the grocery store the other night for cheaper than what the KA store sold them.

We stopped at Penzey in Hartford, Conn on the way home: I bought some of the new garlic shoots, roasted garlic, garlic powder, onion powder, cream of tartar (I go through a lot of cream of tarter from making snickerdoodles all the time!), a new bbq spice that Rick wanted to try, a large bag of Hungarian Sweet Paprika (because I go through that quickly), and a large bag of dried mustard. I forget everything we got, but we bought enough that we got free marjoram and free lemon and pepper. I tend to use a lot of lemon and pepper; it's really good on corn, for example.  @Kat0121, the store wouldn't accept the coupons you had in the post; I printed them out, but no luck. I did get the free marjoram and lemon, so all was not lost. I bought the garlic shoots and am looking forward to trying them out. We also had my BIL's Penzey order and were able to fill that for him, plus he also got the free marjoram and lemon and pepper seasoning....he already told me that I can have the lemon and pepper.

And then we stopped in Conn to visit one of my best friends who has a new furbaby. A little grey kitty, anywhere from 6-10 years old, and a friendly little girl. She's a sweetie. I guess that makes me a fur-auntie again!

I was glad to get home last night. Rick is off work today, so he's taking care of laundry. I was originally going to take off yet today, but I am at work because I have a meeting this afternoon that I could't get out of.

The cats were fine. The petsitters came in twice a day to feed and my sister and BIL came in at night for about an hour or so to spend some time with the clan and give Muffin a chance to be out of the computer room. They sat on the couch and watched a couple tv shows with the cats. They also stopped by in the morning, just to make sure everything was OK. I worry so much about the cats when we're gone and it's nice to know they're in good hands. Last night when I went to bed, I had Mollipop curled up in my left arm and Muffin was curled up in my right arm. I had planned on going to bed to read for a while, but the cats had other ideas and that was fine, too. I fell asleep really early because I was pooped.

The only problem I had was with my butt.
It's really bad now again, from being in the car. I'm going to start looking around for some kind of pillow or something for support. The car has leather seats and my butt is getting sore way too quickly. I don't know what we're going to do; Rick says he's pretty much ready to just trade this car in, but man, I hate to do that. Test-driving a car down a road for a couple miles doesn't give you any idea of how comfortable a car is on a long trip. I was willing to try driving Clarence (PT Cruiser) to Vermont; even as old as he is, I think he could make the trip, but Rick was completely against it. Clarence is a comfortable car for long-distance. Our Hyundai Tucson is not. I kept trying to adjust the lumbar pressure, the seatback level, the seat distance....everything and anything. But after a couple of hours driving, I was really uncomfortable and til we got home, I was in some serious pain. I had trouble sleeping last night; kept awakening from the pain; it's going down my left leg, so I know it's piriformis sciatica again. Short of finding some kind of support for the car seat, I don't know what to do.

Rick is already planning on us going up next year for the second pizza class. This one was more for novices; he's ready for another one! I'm still looking for a bread-baking class with a guest instructor. My dream would be a class with Peter Reinhart (The Bread Baker's Apprentice author) as the guest instructor....and I know he does come in from time to time!

I have a couple pictures from the pizza class. One of Dear Richard with one of his pizzas. And he took a picture of me chowing down on a slice!
I'll post them when I get home tonight.

I'm so glad you guys enjoyed yourselves. Yes I understand about not being able to sit for long periods of time. I know trucks don't get the milage as those little cars but my truck has the most comfortable seats for long distance driving. If I end up getting another car I am seriously considering ripping the front captains seats out of my Tahoe and rip out whatever cheesy seats are in a car and just bolt them in. Jon has a little Toyota and I have the hardest time getting in and out of his car. My truck has running boards so it's very easy to slide out the door and not kill my back/legs. It definitely sounds like your nerve is getting pinched in your back. When my sciatica acts up driving is a nightmare and the only relief I get is after walking for quite a while to straighten it out. sitting on any surface forget it. I only lay down or stand. I hope you get some relief soon.

you know years ago my doctor gave me a script for these stick on pain patches=no they are not narcotic. I will check to see what they are called-my knee acted up something fierce last week and I stuck one of them on and It helped numb it. they work for 12 hours but my insurance didn't cover them. they come in a large box and there are 12 packs of 5 each. so I have tons left. They were 5 years old but they definitely still work. See if your doc can get you some of these? I am so sensitive to so many meds that these stick ons bypass the belly troubles from most NSAIDs.

I hope you get some relief soon. I love the fact that your hubs will join you in cooking. I don't know if Jon would like that..basicly if it's not something greasy and complex mechanisms for tractors/cars etc then he doesn't seem interested. But I will ask him what he thinks because we seriously need to get out more. We both have been sticks in the mud lately. Sounds like you guys had a good time minus your back/legs. And meeting a kitty I am sure made it all worthwhile. I don't know how I would handle having someone come over for the cats as Honeybee needs meds every 12 hours. I could board her at the vets but she doesn't like being in cages. She needs roaming time. plus she would be lonely. So glad you guys had a good time!

It sounds like you had a fun time! How was the weather and foliage up there?

Glad you enjoyed yourself!! That class sounds like a lot of fun.. My problem is I would buy up a truckload of stuff, get inspired, come home, and never use any of it......therefor wasting it...

Was the King Arthur store in New Hampshire? I hope you were able to get some apples along the way..

My favorite orchard is Mack's Apples in Londonderry, NH... love that place..

I want to go up soon for the JonaGold and Mutsu apples. Those are my favorites..and cider and donuts, and squash..

Thanks! We had a good time. I drove up in pouring rain from eastern PA to almost the northern border of New York; in some places, it was downright nasty. The foliage will be better in another couple weeks or so....there were touches of color here and there. It was misty pretty much all weekend, so we didn't get to walk as much as we would have otherwise. It rained on the way home, too, until we got back into Pennsylvania.

The pain patches....well, I'm about ready to try to stick a SalonPas on my butt. I know, sounds really weird. But it hurts.

Rick is really enjoying the classes; I am surprised because I didn't think he would like them so much. But, you know, he has never tried to bake sticky buns since the class last year, so I'm sure he won't be too interested in keeping up with his pizza-making skills.
He took one of me (and of course, I was chowing down).

And another picture of his semolina pizza

Great pictures!

We went to an orchard in NH, but had to settle for Gala apples.

Yum! That Pizza looks great. King Arthur is one of my company's customers, they're in one of our Buena Park, CA warehouses and we ship to DCs in Utah and the Pacific Northwest. I'd love to visit their place in Vermont, even though I love the idea of baking more than I actually bake. ;) It's on the ever-growing to-go-to list. Thanks for sharing your experience, sounds like a really fun time!

And now I've gotta get some dinner together, I'm hungry after reading about pizza with basil, garlic and fresh mozz!

@DarkMavis  nice to see you! You might be interested to know that King Arthur is opening a store/kitchen school in Seattle....a little closer to you than the East. Our instructor was talking about it; she will be flying out to teach some classes when they open and she's really excited about it. You know, sometime when we come home, we could plan ahead of time and go up to Vermont. I'd go with you....maybe your mom would come along, too.

Yeah, that's us....warts, wrinkles, and all.
I always put my hair back in a pony tail when I'm cooking and had just taken it down and was biting into my first slice when Rick took the picture. The instructor made her own pizza while we watched, then while hers was baking, we made ours. We put ours in the oven, hers was coming out, so we got to try hers first. And then we could munch on ours.

I don't know. Hartford. East Hartford. West Hartford. Hartford. All I know is that it's right off I-84, on Park Road, something like that. It's actually fairly easy to find, compared to going to Norwalk, where Rick and I always seem to have trouble (until we got the Tucson with GPS). The neat thing about Norwalk, though, is that Stew Leonard's is located there and we love that store. Since we don't go into Norwalk anymore, we haven't been to Stew's in a while.

LOL. We know. Hartford & West Hartford are 2 separate towns & are like night & day. And East Hartford is a town on the other side of the Connecticut River! You were in West Hartford.

Well, it seems that whenever I actually do get home to PA, my schedule fills up quickly because I'm usually only home for a long weekend, but that sounds like a fun time. If I think I could swing it sometime, I'll certainly get in touch, thanks Pam!

Traveling aside, though, I need some motivation to bake again, I keep saying I will, or I might, and I never do. BF got me a pastry cookbook and mat for xmas last year. Haven't used either, though I have looked at the book. I love looking through cookbooks. But I need to make some baking plans. When it stops being 90 degrees, maybe I will actually turn the plans into action!
