I have domesticated finally my feral cat THEO.   He was fine for months eating the vet recommended in the can ADULT food from Royal Canin.  He now seems to have lost interest in the canned food though he will eat the ADULT pellet version.  He has become interested in my much older cats Royal Canin 'Senior Consultant"  cat food.   Theo is fed apart from my other two cats and that has always been the case.  Does anyone have any advice on what I should do to get Theo interested in an appropriate food for him ( he is  2 years + in age). I understand that it is advisable to provide ''wet' food over dry food if one can.

Thankyou

Michael

I wouldn't worry about an adult eating senior food unless he starts having poop problems. From my understanding senior food is lower calorie/protein/fat because they are less active typically and slightly easier to digest. You can supplement Theo with some wet food to up his intake some if he loses weight. If he won't eat wet food maybe the toppers or fancy feast broths will appeal as a high water content and calorie upper (mine hate the regular canned with a passion and will only do one with a lot of juices).

You might try interesting him in other flavors of wet food.  Some cats like chicken/turkey while other like fish or even beef or duck.  It's really trial and error.  My cats also get bored eating the same flavors over and over.  I have a rotation of 4-6 different types of wet food.  This keeps them interested.

I also have a feral cat that will hardly eat any wet food.  I have tried most everything.  He is a dry food junkie!

Definitely agree on all the above --it's better he eat Senior day food than not at all. We had a trio of foster kittens recently that drove us food-nuts - - two of three of them loved both kitten soft and dry - - - any variety. But one of them would literally back away like we'd offered a plate of...well..something disgusting. Every brand of soft kitten food we'd try.....room temp, warmed up, watered down...always the same. She'd back up in horror. Her weight started to drop - even though she and the littermates were offered dry kitten food at all times. We were at our wit's.... I started picturing force feeding. But then - - - we'd accidentally run out of canned kitten food late one Sunday night, so out of desperation we gave them a can of our cat's adult (not senior - but not kitten) food. She LOVED it! Plus it seemed to peak her interest in the dry. We talked to our vet - he agreed that a little non-kitten soft was fine - particularly if she ate kitten dry. The main thing is that she would eat.

So as long as he's eating - - -and as noted, just keep track of the litterbox situation bc sometimes only dry can cause constipation issue.

Keep us posted! Glad the site/forum helps. It's saved my sanity many times!

Just a thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.   I went to the vet today and brought back a number of Royal Canin sample cans to try on Theo.  He seems to like the Gastro Intestinal version which according to the vet will do him no harm and is still high enough in protein for a young adult. He still will eat the Adult Royal Canin pellets but I like him to have some water intake from the wet food.  This cat site has been very helpful thanks to people like you. Theo

thanks you as well for not having to live an outdoor live this coming Winter!
