Wow, it's October already! Almost time for pumpkin spice goodies, Halloween decorations and winter woollies!

Today's question is about art.

Do you like art? Do you prefer paintings, sculpture, drawings or something else? Do you have a favourite artist? Have you been to see any exhibitions recently?

I've just been to a couple of galleries in Tokyo to see a wood carving exhibition and an exhibition of paintings, drawings and film by Salvador Dali. I like ceramics mainly, but I really like painting and sculpture too. Some of my favourite artists are Dali, Klimt, Schiele, Munch, Kapoor and Lucy Rie.

These are a few postcards I picked up in one of the galleries. Hello Kitty Does Museum Art.

Art is important in my life since I was young.  I used to draw/paint/sculpt and do pottery when younger. Photography took over as I matured.

I took drawing classes at one of the museums in Brooklyn when I was in elementary school too.

Going to galleries, museums and finding art in the streets is still a big part of enjoyment in my life. I'm especially drawn (yea, I did that on purpose) to surrealistic art but really love it all.  Fav artists include Rene Magritte, Picasso, Vermeer, Keith Haring, Diane Arbus, Robert Mapplethorpe, Dali, Miro, Lucien Freud and Bosch.  My tastes are all over the board.

Lately I've become enthralled with what is known as pop surrealism.  Favorite being Mab Graves - I just bought two collectible limited edition plates of her

Love both visual and performing arts.  I have prints of da Vinci drawings hanging in my bedroom.

Unfortunately, there are no galleries anywhere near this benighted little town where I find myself, however, when I lived in Chattanooga TN, I went to galleries and museums in Chattanooga, Nashville, and Knoxville on almost a weekly basis.

Favorite artist would be so hard to choose!  There was an artist back in the late 60s, early 70s who did a poster of an angel mounted on a winged horse, bound to the earth by chains, and reaching out to his companion, whose mount was standing above in clouds.  I have forgotten the name of the poster AND the artist, but he actually did several paintings that were released as posters, and I adored ALL of them.

Is this the one you are talking about?   This one is called Restrictions by John Pitre  http://www.johnpitre.com/open-editions/restrictions-open-edition-print

We went to the Art Museum at Stanford University a few weeks ago to see their exhibit on California Waterways.  It was not what I was expecting and I found it depressing.  Granted California is mostly desert but still.  They had the cards next to each painting explaining what the artist was depicting.  A lot if it was how dams were destroying the area or how they were ads to encourage people to move to the state and implying there was more water than there was.

Their Rodin exhibit was worth seeing though.  The modern art exhibit was odd.

I guess I prefer galleries to museums.

I love the Hello Kitty Postcards!

I tend to gravitate to drawings and paintings, of course prints are what is in my budget.  I also like some photography particularly black and white photography.  I would say that my favorite is Van Gogh.  I think I am drawn to his work because of what is known about his mental illness.  Psychiatrists are still trying to diagnose him.  I think it is down to bipolar or schizophrenia.  His works to me anyway are like windows into a troubled mind.  I loved how he worked with color.

i really enjoy art -- visual, as well as performing. there are so very many artists whose work i enjoy. some of my favorites are Georgia O'Keefe, Dali, Van Gogh, Ansel Adams. i'm pretty open to new and unusual art, though many times i either like or simply don't like the piece/artist's work in general. i also enjoy Shubert (the composer), and love the old Courier & Ives prints.

I see things I think are pretty but I guess I'm not hugely into art.  I'm not artistic in the slightest myself and I've never developed much of an interest in art in general.

Those Hello Kitty cards are hilarious Norachan Norachan

I rather love Dali too :) I'm not all that familiar with artists these days - I could have answered this question far better maybe 12 years ago when I was in London and going to galleries often (something that was particularly enjoyable because I was living with an artist friend and she was so knowledgeable about different artists and styles :9: ). I do (possibky rather predictably) like a lot of the 'greats' though.

These days, I'm really only familiar with more local artists. I had a wonderful time looking round a glass artist's workshop-gallery last week -http://www.gorska.co.uk/, and I adore Stef Ottevanger's work too (her sculptures are just beautiful). There's a local ceramics artist, Andrew Kerr, who does simply beautiful pieces too. There's a silver and goldsmith who dad knows (dad worked with his wife for years) who is simply amazing too - Kevin Coates :D

That's a really nice picture @sivyaleah  I'm a fan of Hieronymus Bosch too. Those fantastically detailed paintings of weird little demons and monsters! Like paintings of his nightmares.

@Mamanyt1953  I used to be really spoilt when I lived in a big city and could go to a different gallery every week. There is one little gallery in this town that has had some good stuff in. They had a Juan Miro exhibition last year and a collection of Warhol prints the year before that. Otherwise I have to make a 2 hour trip to Tokyo if I want to see anything.

@Columbine  the kiln formed glass is very nice. I did a course of glass making while I was at university. One of my friends was really good at it and ended up getting a job at Murano. The stuff they make is mouthwatering, looks almost edible.

@Muffy  @Alicia88  What do you have on your walls at home? No paintings or posters?

Nothing is on my walls, at the moment.  My boyfriend got me a personalized Hogwarts acceptance letter for our one year anniversary and I've been planning to frame it and put it up but I haven't gotten around it, yet - meaning whenever I go to the store, I forget to look.

I lean towards classic art.. Monet, Renoir, etc... I am not into abstract or modern..

I enjoy peaceful scenes.. and love ocean/water views..

I also love flowers.. I used to have a huge garden. I guess having flowers around (even in prints) kind of make up for it...

I can also change them with the season's colors...

I love flowers, too.  I tried having a house plant once.  My allergies about killed me.  So not fair.

My allergies kill me also; before I adopted Artie, I made it a point to always buy fresh cut flowers and have them in the house. I had to be careful with the ones I bought.. no scents at all..

Gardening was different..

Now, I have some artificial wreaths on the wall and picture of flowers.. Everything that Artie cannot eat...

Yes, so unfair....but I love him...

My allergies are killer no matter what plant it is.  I'm allergic to grass, trees, pollen, dust, mold, etc.  Every spring I'm so miserable I almost can't stand it.
