I'm new here - I've posted pics of the cats I've had, including one who is no longer with us - Neko - and one - Clancy - who was a sweet sweet stray that I found a home for.  Buster, my husband's cat (Buster picked him as his favorite), has been very ill.  I happened on this site looking for hints.  Buster has been vomiting at least daily for over a 6 months and we have tried changing food, looking for allergies, vet visits with meds given, etc.  His blood work is always fine, including today- no thyroid issues or other issues.  I do not have a copy of the results though, which I should get because I understand there are "markers" for certain diseases in the blood.  Short of $1000. X rays and CT scans to diagnose a fatal illness, we are stumped.  We do not have the money for these most expensive tests, and, if he has cancer, treatments are expensive also.  He was given an anti-vomiting shot today, some sub-cutaneous fluids to ease the shots given and some B-12.  I will post more details later.

Yes - he gave him Ondoncetron and Pepcid prescriptions 2 months ago, but the vomiting didn't stop - and Buster continued to lose weight.  We put him on chicken only food - we have 4 other cats in the mix, also.  They all get chicken only - no grains.  They get canned cat food - Fancy Feast chicken classic - twice a day, and Wellness chicken dried cat food on hand all the time for them to nibble on.  Buster is now on Prednisone as of yesterday - and seems a bit better.  He has gone from a cat that "talked" all the time to very quiet.  From independent to wanting to be with us and on top of us all the time.  He has lost 3 pounds in the past 2 months, which is a lot for a small animal.  That in spite of all we feed him.  When he vomits, it is only after all food has been digested - and he throws up a brownish liquid, sometimes a little grainy.

So far since the vet gave him a B12 shot and anti vomiting shot yesterday, along with prednisone, he hasn't vomited.  Keeping my fingers crossed - I hate when he vomits, he really has to heave a lot first.  It looks so uncomfortable and even painful.  Poor baby.

We have had a cat for a long time (about 5 or 6 years) that had an infection when we first got her.  We took her to the Vet and he gave her antibiotic.  She has vomited daily for the last six years.  I have tried moist food and foods for cats with sensitive stomachs and nothing has worked.   She does not eat treats, or chicken or dried chicken.  She is now eating Rachel Rays Nutrish food.  My next move is to try her n the grain free food.  BUT she is health and energetic and other than being thin shows no effects for losing her food.

did your vet put your cat on a steroid?  our cat has IBS and had pancreatitis, and he vomited daily, sometimes several times daily.  the daily vomiting stopped when the vet gave him prednisolone in drop form.  now he might throw up once a week, and considering he also has other conditions that can cause nausea, that's pretty darn good.  it's also something vets commonly try, so i'm surprised yours hasn't.

best of luck with your kitty!

If his symptoms go away on predisone (prednisolone is better than prednisone for cats) given everything else you have said then a presumptive diagnosis of IBD is very reasonable.  You can also try prescription noevl protein diets but once a cat starts loosing weight on IBD its quite likely that using the pred is required, although you may be able to wean him in time.

I did not elect to have goldie put on steroids.  I believe hers is a nervous stomach.  She never vomited until we had another cat.  They play together but I think she gets really nervous.  I also know that my other cat Samson used to grab her food so she would eat very fast.  Now samson has two others with whom to contend.  He also is eating faster and will throw up.

Check out this information on prednisone .

My Pandy was frequently throwing up. First thing my vet did was an x-ray in her office, which showed a plum-sized tumor. She was euthanized the next day. Never again will I ignore vomiting as a symptom.

An update on Buster. Prednisolone has helped reduce the daily puking to once every three days. However, it has not helped him feel better or gain the weight lost. He does not seem to be in pain, but he just looks depressed for the lack of a better description. And he has dropped all together about 6 pounds in the last six months. It shows. He was never a food beggar, but the last couple of months he is always hungry and eats anything. Cat food, special tuna snacks, and literally anything else. He will jump in your lap after food.

He maintains about 75% of his daily routine, but sleeps more now.

He just looks unhappy, and the weight loss adds to that.

This is what the vet has him on, but even he admits it is an educated guess if anything will work. He seems to think it is cancer.

Ondansetron Chews 2MG

Pepsi AC

Prednisolone 5mg

This is the second vet, The first was a general vet and had no ideas. This vet now specializes in just cats.

Buster is about 12 years old.

If anyone has any ideas I am all ears.

Without improvement I fear we may have to put him to sleep. I do not want him to suffer.

Thanks

When were his kidneys and thyroid tested last? Are they normal? What food is he eating? Is he vomiting food or bile? How many times a day are you feeding him?

Okay re-reading your post that his kidneys and thyroid were good. Did you have a urinalysis done? What was his T4? What were his kidney levels? Have you tried giving plain baby food (no onions or garlic) to see if that helps settling his stomach?

He is just puking bile. No food. We have had three sets of tests over the last four months. I do not know his T4 levels or kidneys, just that the vet said no issues were found. We feed him a small can of wet food in the AM and PM and dry food is available all day. He also begs for 'treats', which is just a different brand of dry non grain cat food.

We will try the slippery elm powder.

Thanks for your reply.

I had a cat who always threw up, the vet had me try Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein Adult HP & she was on that food for the rest of her life, no more throw up besides a hairball here & there

I am sorry to hear that Buster is having so much difficulty.  We have an outside cat that we took in after she was injured.  She is quite healthy! There is another cat (Goldie) who has vomited since we have other cats.  She is also quite thin and has lost much weight over the years BUT she is active.  I had a friend whose dog got cancer.  He spent well over a thousand dollars and I could tell from the dogs behavior that he was different. Ultimately, the dog died.  Cancer in pets does not have a good success rate.  Maybe the prednisone is impacting him.   I would research the side effects!

I'm sorry to hear your Buster still isn't feeling well. Did your first vet do an Ultrasound or xray? Was there a test for pancreatitis?

I would ask your vet about Cerenia; it works on a different part of the brain in cats plus it has anti-inflammatory properties. Cerenia was very critical to help my kitty Tiger stop vomiting.   Ondansetron worked well for nausea, but I would ask your vet if you could give it twice daily, provided your cat weighs at least 10 pounds and especially if the vet doesn't think Cerenia will help.

for a while our cat was on pred 2x per day, and that helped over time, and i'm pretty sure part of that was putting weight back on after the puking was under control.  hopefully what buster is on will kick in and he'll start to feel better - losing so much body weight makes anyone weak, so hopefully he'll keep eating and regain his strength.  if he keeps eating and not putting on weight, perhaps he should have his thyroid tested again.

cerenia made HK just a little lethargic, although it helped a lot with the vomiting.  as RuthM says, it works differently, so could be worth a shot.

I would not put an animal to sleep unless you are SURE he is "suffering".  Many times humans tend to think an animal is suffering when they are getting old.  I have put only one animal to sleep (he had cancer and was convulsing).  It is not easy! I had 5 animals dye and allowed all to die naturally.  I did not deem that they were in pain so I let nature take its course.  I would definitely try Cerenia.  It is the #1 choice for vomiting in cats.

The is a person named GoHolistic who has experience with this.  You might try to contact her in other threads or with a private message.

Our Siamese would vomit too. We found out he has IBS. The vet put him on a special diet and Vit B-12 shots. So far he is doing better. I don't know how prednisone affects cats but I take it for my RA and it makes me hungry all the time. So that may be why he is begging now.
