Sonny is about 9 weeks old, healthy as can be... However, the little guys has a couple extra toes on one of his paws! When I first got him, I noticed he was definitely double pawed on both his front paws. But the first time I went to trim his claws I counted the little pink pads and noticed that his front right paw actually had a total of 8! Claws included... As you can see in the photo, one of the claws is warped, it doesn't retract and he gets it caught on a lot of things. I chose not to trim this one because it was more pink than the others, and it appeared to have a much larger "wick" inside. (I was told this was equivalent to their finger, and I did not want to injure him.) It's completely curled under his paw so he must walk on it. Does anybody know if this is common with extra toes/claws or should I inquire with the vet? I just don't want him to be in any pain, if it's causing any at all! All I am noticing is that it does get stuck on things.

He is a polydactyl kitty.  It's genetic and is common in Maine Coon kitties but can happen in any kitty.  Have you heard of the Hemingway cats?  The genetics for this is common among them.  Usually it's one extra toe on one or more paws but can be more.  It does sound like there is something odd going on with the claw on one toe.  If it is curling to the point of going into the toe pad I would have a vet look at it.

He is seeing a vet soon so I'll definitely make a point to talk about the claw! I had never heard of what you had said before but very interesting... Still actually not sure of the breed, but definitely not Maine Coon. :)
Thank you!

My brother has a polydactyl, but his extra claws don't give him any trouble. I would get that odd claw looked at - it may that it has to be removed to save him from pain and trouble as he grows.

I would just be worried that because it gets caught on things, that may be an accident waiting to happen. I would try to file the tip down and definitely talk to the vet about it. He could get really hurt snagging it on the wrong thing.
