We took our 10 year old female cat to the vet yesterday. She had stopped eating and was sleeping a lot. The vet looked at her, did a fecal, took her temp (105), felt her belly and checked her teeth. She has ulcers on her gums and bad tater build up so she recommends having her teeth cleaned soon. She thinks that the not eating is due to a painful mouth. She prescribed Clavamox, Pro-Pectain, Metronidazole and Profender MED. So far today she has eaten a little bit twice, maybe a teaspoon each time, but nothing like her normal eating. She only drank a little water as well. My question is, how long should I wait before going into panic mode and taking her back to the vet? We plan to have her teeth done within the next week or so, (as soon as I raise the money). But her not eating much makes me sick with worry and with tomorrow being Friday our vet is closed Saturday and Sunday.

This is a difficult question, because you just took her in yesterday, and need a day or two, maybe three,  for the antibiotics to work, to reduce her fever, and fight the infection.

Sometimes antibiotics take even longer, to see improvements.

Can you Assist feed by syringe feeding your cat with watered down soft pate foods?

I think because of the ulcers, I would probably call your Vet on Friday, and ask about pain meds?

Except that pain meds do have side effects, too, like sleepiness and not eating, so I'm not sure if your Vet would want to prescribe them, on top of the meds that your cat is already getting.

Also ask your Vet if they have a payment plan, so that you can get her teeth done sooner, or if you can apply for Care Credit, that some vet clinics accept.

Hi laniem laniem I'm sorry you and your kitty are going through this.

I would call the vet tomorrow and express my concerns and observations and see what they think.

In the mean time I would offer you girl something like chicken or turkey babyfood (meat only, no spices, very smooth and soft). Warm it just a little to enhance the smell, most cats like it. You can also offer her plain cooked chicken. The main thing is getting her to eat. I would offer her several small meals until she starts eating more normally.

What is her usual diet?

It may take a few days for the antibiotic to make a difference.

Hope that your sweet kitty starts to feel better soon. Please keep us posted on how things are going.

Thank you both so much for your fast response! I really needed to hear some folks with level heads about all this that are in fact cat lovers as well. When I start to worry about one of my fur babies I worry myself sick as can be. Plus having to give her her meds with a syringe when I know her mouth hurts every 12 hours is driving me bats! On her best day she is not a easy kitty to do that to.  I will try your ideas and also try to stop panicking so much and let the meds have more time to work. With the weekend coming and my vet being closed on those two days it makes my anxiety go through the roof because the would haves, should haves, could haves start up. I will call her first thing and ask about the pain meds and any advise that she might be able to provide. Also I will schedule for her teeth to be worked on at the earliest possible day. I will keep you all updated on her progress. Thank you again!!!
