Simple question: how much time do you give them to eat before taking away the food?

My cats don't  free feed, but if there is food remaining on the plate when it's time to go to work, I'll leave it there. They seem to finish it in a couple of hours most days. I do the same with their evening feeding. The vet would like them to have a more exact feeding schedule, though. No one is overweight, but there was a concern over one of their blood sugar results. (probably caused by infection, but we're waiting for it to stabilize)

For the last couple of days I've given them exactly an hour to get their fill, but am concerned if this is enough time.  They still haven't figured it out completely, and I am currently concerned if two of my four are eating enough at the moment, as they are more interested in the birds in the morning, or what I'm having for breakfast instead of filling up as quickly as possible.

I also have another cat who comes back to the plate multiple times even within that hour to get more. He's a bit on the thin side, and I don't want to keep him from eating. This morning, he was eating when I wanted to pick up the plates, so I had to give him a few extra minutes, so I wasn't ripping the food away.

The last couple of days I've been tossing a lot of food, since they rarely touch it after it's been refrigerated, I can't put it out again. They should be eating around 5-6 cans a day between them, but the last couple of days it's only about 3 or 4. That's certainly not enough!

So, how long do you keep your's out? (assuming you don't free feed!) Is an hour enough time, and they just need to get used to it, or should it be a bit longer?

I'm in a similar situation. When I first get up in the morning, first thing I do is feed my cats their breakfast of wet food. Sometimes they eat it all before I go to work, but most times there is still food left in their dishes.

I just let them eat at their own pace and don't have an issue with leaving the wet food out for them during the day. It's always gone by the time I get back from work and they have supplemented this with dry food.

If the blood text come back negative and none are underweight, I would not change a thing.

10 minutes for my adults and 20 minutes for my kitten. The adults are fed 1/3 of a cup once a day and the kitten 1/3 of a cup twice a day. I use to free feed my adults...now I don't.

Their food has never lasted more than 5 minutes.

Mine also. I WISH my resident girl cat would take an hour or so to graze her meal! She gulps it down within 5 minutes. She will lick every little morsel and speck off her bowl till it looks spotless. Then she'll want more food in about two hours.

Their morning and nightly wet food meals get eaten up pretty much in one sitting, sometimes my 1 year old will leave a few bites and come back 30 minutes later and eat it, I leave it for him. Their mid day dry feeding usually doesn't get eaten up too fast, and I just leave it until its time for more wet food, usually it's all gone by then.

My cats breakfast consists of 1/2 a can each of Friskies. I leave it out all day. The also have a self feeder of dry Purina Muse Charmed with Chicken. I have a thick cat & a thin one so its hard to put them on a diet because of the thin one. I'm fostering a kitten she gets about 1/2 a can of Friskies also in the morning. She's a quick eater so it's gone by lunch.Foster kitten gets all the dry kitten formula Good Natured she can eat.

My boy finishes his meal at one go in around 5-6 minutes. No chomping. Most of the time he licked his bowl clean and sometimes just leave some scraps here and there.
Sometimes he just take in 2 mouthfuls and walked away and use the litter box (guess it was urgent so he stopped eating :lol3:) and after that, he'll come back like 5 minutes later and finish up. But there are times he took a few bites and run away, and I'll either leave it there for another 10 mins or move the bowl up to the counter and when he sees me taking his food away, he'll hop onto the counter and finish the rest.
If I see him doing the covering up action, I know he is not going to finish it so I take it away. I don't leave his food out for more than 15 mins. Don't want him to have the feeling that food is always lying around for him to eat. I don't free feed him and he is on wet food. He is fed several times a day except that he'll miss one or two meals if we are out for a few hours.

Yikes, I have been free feeding my boy. Is this not good? He eats dry blue wilderness. I had him on life abundance for a couple of months because that is what he had his first 6 months. I have tried a few different wet foods but he pukes it up (except for LA).

As long as you're feeding him the correct amount for a cat his size free feeding isn't that bad. Just be careful that the dry food doesn't get damp and mouldy if the weather is humid.

I give my cats wet food twice a day and it usually all gets eaten within about 20 minutes. I free feed dry over-night or if I'm going to be out longer than usual during the day. My cats are all former feral or rescued strays and some of them still do the gobble-and-puke routine if they go too long without food.

Different techniques work for different cats.
