Hello all, wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this or not. I was wondering if vets usually check to see if a female animal is pregnant before spaying her. We've had a stray show up (with a kitten probably around 8 weeks or more old) who we plan to spay the 30th.

Sometimes she seems to be pregnant to me and other times she doesn't. Our family has discussed it, and we don't want her to be spayed of she is indeed pregnant. Since we don't know if she is ourselves we'd like to think since she's an outdoor cat who we don't know very well (3 weeks) he would check before doing the surgery and let us know and check if we'd like to proceed or cancel. I've read that it seems that some places assume that you knew they were pregnant beforehand or that you just don't care one way or the other and continue with the operation. It would be nice to hear if anyone would happen to know about this.

Hi @KittyGender  Welcome to TCS.

Your vet will be able to check if she is pregnant or not, but you will need to ask him to do this and make it clear that you don't want her to be spayed if she is pregnant.

You can ask your vet to do an ultra sound, which I've heard is pretty expensive, or a blood test. This article explains in more detail.

Keep us posted on how things go. If she is going to have kittens we can offer you lots of support with the new family.
