The comment "The speed at which the babies came out was overwhelming. It was like a popcorn popper," the baby's grinning father, Keith Hanselman, told reporters. certainly put a few pictures in my head!

I can not imagine popping out 6 babies a minute. I am sure that for most women, one is enough!

All I can say is

At least they clarified that it was a cesarean birth. Makes you wonder about the birth order, though....would that still hold true if the Dr., not nature, chose which baby came into the world first?

Besides the fact that they were caesarian, they were premature which explains how 6 could fit in the mother. When I read the title of this thread, I tried to imagine a full term pregnant mom!

Sadly, with multiple births in humans, not all developing fetuses reach full term before birth. The human body is not designed for multiple births.

Also, in this particular case I do have to wonder whether this couple underwent fertility treatment or IVF.

I've said this before: human beings are NOT designed to have litters! People and doctors are getting carried away, by what they CAN do and not by what they SHOULD do.

I can understand someone wanting to have a baby (or two) but, is it worth the risk to have mega-multiples? These babies are always premature, with the attendant health problems. Many of them do not survive and the ones that do, usually have long-term health problems.

In addition, how many working-class people can afford that many children? I know, that with all of the publicity, a lot of stuff is donated but, that is a lot of mouths to feed, bodies to clothe and feet to shoe and, being all the same age and relative size, forget hand-me-downs.

Yes the humna body man not beable to handle it. But when you want a child or children bad enough you are willing to make any sacrafice. If it weren't for the invitro and Fertility pills I know many parents that wouldn't have children at all..........I sad to say am one of those people. When I do decide to have children I will have to under go all the special treatments and I for one wouldn't care about problems of premature birth or multiples for that matter because the gift of having 2 or more wonderful loving beings is more then the any childless family could want. Some people just aren't lucky enough to have proper working parts and need the medical help. And I personally say THANK YOU GOD!!!!!!

Before they got married, Mark and Sam wanted 5 kids. I figured that they'd change their minds, after one or two. Sure enough, after having twins, first time out, Mark is seriously considering a vascectomy.

There is a very good chance that they could have another set of twins and they want to be able to provide the best life possible, for their kids. They realize that, financially, the whole family will be better off, if they limit the size of it. Whatever their decision, I will support them.

I do not understand why fertility doctors implant 6-10 embryos at one time. They know full well that they setting up a scenario for miscarriages, premature births and long-term complications. I can see the point, in fertlizing numerous eggs but, why not implant 2 or 3 and save the rest for future tries?

The poor mother has gone through the hormonal changes, attendant with fertility treatments, probably been on bed rest, for 4-5 months, has had a tremendous strain put on her body, been subjected to major abdominal surgery and, after all of that, is expected to be the primary caregiver, for 5+ infants, many of whom will have serious health problems. She's worn out, before she's even started!

Ask any Dr. and they will tell you that once any egg is fertilized it has to be implanted and more often then not the eggs do not survive. It's more rare to see women give birth to 4+ infants. It's not the Doctors decision as to actually doing it. It's the couples. They are told of all the chances and all the possiable complications. They choose if they are willing to complete the process. It's not like they are going in there saying we want invitro and the dr just says ok here have you hubby do this into this jar and you lay down and I will take you eggs and you will have a baby in a few more months. They know what they are getting into. My best friend just spent the last 2 years of her life having this done to her. And not once did she keep an Embryo. She never retained them. When she frist started trying to have kids her and her husband only wanted one. Then after they discovered all the problems they were having Both her and her Husband decided to look into in vitro. They knew they could end up with muliples but they wanted children so they did it. Like i said it never worked for them but she is now the mother on a Wonderful 5 month old little girl she adopted and 5 months pregnant.

Like stated above couples are told about the precedure from start to final outcome before they even start it. They have the choice.

In defence of the medical preofession I would also like to point out that doctors do advise to reduce the amount of successful implantations of embryos if the situation does mean that multiple births will occur. But at the end of the day, the final decision is the couple's, not the doctors.

Interestingly enough in the UK, or perhaps just Britain, (I only heard it on the radio so I'm not 100% sure where), it is now being considered that the regulation of only implanting a few embryos at a time be enforced so that clinics adhere to the policy more closely. The incidence of multiple births has increased in the past few years and it has been attributed to fertility clinics.
