Hello everybody, I'm a little worried about having my kitty spayed at my current vet. I've had a point of contention with the vet when she suggested I switch my kitty to dry food even though I've repeatedly told her I'd prefer to feed her a high quality wet food for the sake of her urinary tract. She's very rough when giving my little baby shots and now Anna absolutely HATES them. I'm looking to have her spayed soon but I'm so worried about this vet. I want someone who's gentle with my furrbaby. Am I overreacting? Would it be wise to find her a new vet? I'm a little confused :(

I panicked quite a bit when I had to bring my girl in to get spayed, but the vet made me feel certain she would be taken care of. There are 3 vets at the place I go to and they are all amazing. If I were you I'd look up vets around your area on Yelp, it helped me a ton! If they were rough with my kitten I would have left immediately!

Change your vet if you don't like her. You're not obliged to stay with her.

Maybe you should really change another vet. What kind of vet would be rough to furry baby?

Your vet is like your doctor...if you don't feel comfortable, safe and confident in their ability.....get a new one!!!

I agree - if you are not comfortable with the vet, then find a new vet elsewhere. It's important to have a vet you can easily talk to and ask questions and get actual answers from. Your cat's health depends on it. You don't need permission or anything from the current vet. Just get copies of your cat's medical records and bring them to the appointment with another vet.

Food is one thing many vets don't really know much about. Some push prescription foods, other say dry food is great, raw food is a no-no, etc. You and your vet don't need to agree on what the cat eats. Just feed whatever you feel is best for your cat. The vet might not like it but can't force you to feed something else. Unless your cat has a medical condition that requires a specific type of food (low carb, low phosphorus, prescription food for certain conditions, etc), just feed what you want. If you prefer to feed canned food, then feed canned food regardless of what a vet says.

Thank you guys so much. Her vet really pushed a big brand cat food and was defensive when I asked questions about the grains and fillers. I have an appointment with another vet who seems to really care about her animals. You guys really helped me feel confident about that decision. It means so much!!!!!

When it comes to spay surgeries I say if you feel the slightest uncomfortable go somewhere else. I had a cat get a bad spay and she had all sorts of problems and a nasty scar. I felt wrong about going there and I have regretted it ever since. My current cat I paid more to have her spayed at my current vet because I trust them. But it took me going to 4 different places to find a place that felt right. It was worth the searching because now I have a vet who respects my choices, listens to me, and loves my cats.

I am glad you are finding a new vet. That first one sounded like a jerk. @LTS3  my vet full on admitted that the current research into cat food diets specifically is behind. She explained what she wanted me to look for in a food and when I mentioned one she didn't know she wrote it down to research herself instead of immediately going against it. After research she said that it looked good and if my cats were happy and healthy on it that it worked. So much nicer than the vets who wanted me to go with the big name brand loaded with carbs because a 15 year old research (and probably sponsorships) convinced them to.

My Looby Loo got spayed at a low-cost vet improperly last year & subsequently went into heat every month. Cost me $700 in January to have the ovarian tissue removed that the original vet left behind.
