my smaller cat mr mew was just diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy by our awesome vet in town. as sad as I am to hear he has a potentially deadly disorder/disease, I'm glad we caught this in time.

for two weeks i am giving him amoxicillin twice a day and lactulose twice a day two hours after his antibiotics, I'm going back to the vet to see if hes improved or if we need to change something after these two weeks.

we're pretty sure his is congenital since he was a rejected kitten in a very old abandonded house full of ferals. he has a very bad heart murmur and CH(the wobbly cat syndrome) from being sick before we found him.

thankfully (for my wallet, and the speed that mew gets treated) the vet in town firmly belives that blood tests only affirm what we think a pet has and wastes precious time for a suffering pet.

she also said often a blood test says your cats fine on paper, but you've still got a sick cat with these symptoms that need treatment.
her mentality is awesome because the vet in the next town over has killed several pets by stalling treatment to do more and more tests to get money.

(she does do blood tests but they are very expensive around here! and you waste days or weeks waiting for results that might tell you nothing)

but anyways my question is does anyone have experience with this?
and how did your cat react to the treatments?
did you get the surgery? how much did that cost for you?

edit: forgot to say we did get him checked for diabetes and he has his shots :)

I did a quick search for member with cats with this, and only came up with one that had this that had any responses, and but it is a very old thread, and it never came to any conclusions.

Idid find this website on it that's pretty informative.  Have you seen it:   http://www.2ndchance.info/hepaticEncephalopathy.htm

What surgery are you referring to?  I didn't read anything on the above webpage referencing any type of surgery (for animals) to help.

for Mr. Mew.  He's certainly got his issues

ah thank you I'll check that site out as well, and surgery is an option depending on whats causing the liver problem the vet said

in mews case the vet thinks is an issue with a vein that didnt grow properly so surgery would be to artificially make that vein bigger and connect to the liver properly

B bertie thank you :) mew is amazingly affectionate and follows us around the house most days. and yes he takes a long time to learn how to do cat things he still can't jump very well but he's an amazing climber
