What's wrong with Andy Rooney?!?

Here's a quote from the Don Imus show.

I"m not going to spend $9 just for a few laughs"-Andy Rooney on why he won't see The Passion Of The Christ.

Is that the most disgusting, stupid statement you've ever heard? I am so incredibly appalled. I just can't believe that anyone could be that ignorant.

I don't care what religion you are or what religion he was referring to. I don't care if you disagree with the movie and how it was made. You don't just summarily dismiss as "a few laughs" something so meaningful to so many people!

Like I said, no one should say that about someone elses religion. Would he say that about Schindler's List? What about the life of Buddha?

I never really liked Andy Rooney but I just believed he was a bit of an angry old man. Now I think he's an ignorant, unfeeling, stupid, angry old man.

I would have to understand the context of his statement - what discussion led up to that comment being made. People are often taken out of context.

If you don't like that, then don't read this!

http://snopes.com/politics/soapbox/rooney5.asp

Transcript of Mr. Rooney's commentary on the religious items of the day. It doesn't contain the quote you are refering to, but given this transcript it wouldn't surprise me if he said that.

You're right, that is extremely insensitive. I'm not a Christian, but I certainly respect the faith and what that movie means to people. I'm not sure if Andy Rooney's intentions are to get himself ostracized from the news community or what, but I think that's what it's going to get him!

Well, Andy Rooney is famous for being straight to the point.

He doesn't bother me, after all, it is just his opinion. I have mine, we all have ours. Nothing we can do to change other people's minds.

People are entitled to their religions, yes, and people are also entitled to feel as if they shouldn't have to walk on eggshells when it comes to religion.

It is just one man's statement, it doesnt mean that the whole world feels the same way.

We can choose to ignore him.

I agree with Amy. My impression, after reading the snopes link, was that Rooney objected to anyone claiming to have a "special relationship" with God, or a stronger faith in God than others, and, by implication, putting themselves above other people. I haven't seen the film, so I personally can't say whether I would judge it to be a "religious experience" or a "sacrilege". I hope my reaction would be: "It's a movie. Period." While Gibson is entitled to be insulted by Rooney's comment, I fail to see why others should consider themselves personally attacked. Many Catholics don't condone the type of Catholicism (rejection of Vatican II) practiced by Gibson, and that is their right, just as it is his right, IMO, to object to the changes made by the Council. I attended a Jesuit university, where theology and philosophy courses were required. One theology course I had was called, "The Search for the Historical Jesus", and was incredibly interesting, but led me, personally, to the conclusion that religion is a matter of faith, not proof. I'm sure the next few months are going to see innumerable discussions among theologians and Biblical scholars about the "authenticity" of the film, and that equal numbers will praise and condemn it.
