Hello, I just subscribed tot this forum and need some opinions to calm me down a bit as I am really anxious on a torn nail...
My cat, 5 years old male, 15 days ago torn one of his nails in the back left paw leaving the quick exposed. He didn't look in pain and he never limped on it. I found out about it checking on him after realizing he was licking that spot a little to much.
The vet cleaned the area ( a little piece of claw was still hanging), gave him a shot of Convenia antibiotics that will cover him for 14 days and gave me a bottle of Chlorexiderm disinfectant and advised to clean and disinfect the paw with it after every litter box visit, to keep the wound clean. She didn't request a follow up visit.
So, it is 10 days now we saw the vet: the first week the wound was healing and improving nicely, I was rinsing with lukewarm water and the Chlorexiderm the paw twice a day. No discharge whatsover from the site.
Yesterday, after the cleaning process he lost a few drops of blood. Nothing major, it stopped right away, and today it is an orangy liquid (blood and plasma), again in very little quantities nothing major. My family tells me that if I constantly wet the wound every day I won't give it the time to heal...could this be true?
Also I realized this liquid is sticking with some crust together the hair of the two digits were the torn nail is, should I leave it this way? My mom keeps telling me that I touch it and wet it too much, and that at this point I should leave him alone and let him take care of it by himself with his licking..etc..because he's covered by the antibiotic anyways...please advise...I am very anxious...he still doesn't look like he's in any pain, besides the moments I touch it to medicate it, but I believe it's because at this point he's very annoyed at me...
