Joey is staying in at night for nearly a month now.  He wants to come in and he uses the litter box if he needs to when he's in.  But he still goes out during the day and I think now that he can sleep through the night he is more active during the day.  Joey just can't stop hunting.  Just now DH caught him next door, stalking something, and heading toward a busy road.  You know what cats are like they can focus so intently on the poor little creature they want to catch they run in front of a car.  Fortunately Joey does come when I call him but even then he got distracted three times on the way across the neighbour's lawn to me.  He's inside now, eating some tasty turkey but he'll have to go back out at least by mid day so the other cats can have some time in the house, upstairs out of the basement.  He's only met one of them so far so not ready to spend time alone with the three.  If he gets hit on the road I will be devastated.  Joe is special, he chose us.  I am in love with him.  He will not go to anyone else in the neighbourhood, even when they call him and he won't come in if we have a visitor.  I guess this hunting, he's darn good at it too, is what kept him alive and really, still is since he'd rather hunt than eat cat food.

I understand your concerns. To be honest, not one of our cats who has crossed the street has survived. Our cats who are fixed & wish to live outside have never crossed the street in their lives. Pixie has never even left our backyard!

Maybe you could make him hunt in your house with a feather thingy on a stick several times whenever he is inside. Tire him out and keep him stimulated.
The raw food diet is worth a try too.

I do have raw, for the dog.  Joey will eat some but it's the chase that gets him going.    Joey will hunt leaves blowing by and bugs jumping or flying over the grass.  It's the movement that gets him going, mostly.  Yes. and I do play with him inside and out.  We have managed to save the lives of many chipmunks this summer.  Play with a string on stick is how we save them, silly cat lets them go to chase the string.  Joey has tons and tons of energy.

Oh, and Joe is neutered.  Live trapped him and had that done last November, nearly a year ago.  In my experience it doesn't stop the boys from roaming at all, no matter how young they are done.  It seems to be a boy thing, not a sex thing.  Worse if intact but still not good neutered.

I agree. Some neutered outdoor cats will not roam, but, for others, it is the Call of the Wild.
