Hi Fellow Cat Lovers!

I have three female Abyssinian cats, two are 9 years old and one is 7 years old (Gracie, Sophie and Madison). A few years ago I started to notice that Gracie was urinating outside the litter box in unusual places, such as plastic grocery bags on the counter, laundry, my shoes, my leather messenger bag, top of boxes, on top on the car cover in the garage and other strange places. First, let me state that our cats are strictly indoor cats and we guard them with our life - when I stated Gracie urinated on the car cover in the garage, the car was stored inside for the winter and the garage door was never opened with a cat present, as I said, we guard them with our life. When Gracie started this behavior, I immediately took her to the vets for a full work up to rule out any possible medical condition - she received a clean bill of health, no UTI, blood work was great and everything checked out fine - Thank God! I'm just very perplexed as to why she is doing this...we have 5 litter boxes which we clean regularly, three of which are the jumbo size litter boxes. I've tried using different brands/types of litter thinking perhaps that might do the trick, but the problem continues. As cats do, Gracie has adopted me as her person and she is my very loyal companion and I just love her to pieces. She sleeps with me every night and sits on my lap constantly. For the most part she gets along with the other two girls except she "chirps" when Sophie comes close to me...she doesn't hiss but makes an odd chirping noise. I would say Gracie is possessive of me, she doesn't like to share me...if that makes any sense. If anyone reading this has any insight as to what may be causing this problem or can offer any suggestions that I might try to curb this behavior, I would be forever grateful!!
Many thanks for your time!!

1. clean it up as soon as possible, using feliway spray as finish  so the miscreant thinks this area is already marked.

2. try as much calming remedies (feliway diffusers, calming products, colostrum, thundershirt, hiding places, get creative) as possible.

3. if that doesn't work you can try have your vet prescribe anti-anxiety medication. This was the only thing that worked on the Rogue, who loved to spray just for the fun of it.

4. if at all possible, try to increase territory by adding vertical space - shelves, cat trees, prime hiding spots, to decrease tension.

5. Please don't stop loving her. She doesn't do it to spite you. I'm just saying this because urinating inappropriately is the biggest cause of death for indoor cats (stated in "Pets on the couch" from Nicholas Dodman - I don't recommend the book, too many sad stories. He is quite fond of with his anti-anxiety drugs, and they work, too).

Hi Roguethecat,

Thank you very much for your response and for your most helpful advice!! I just purchased three "Cloud" shelves for our girls and will get those put up in the next few days and will purchase another cat tree...we currently have two. I can promise you that no matter what behavior, I will always love my girl!! She is the love of my life and this is just an inconvenience, nothing that would ever make me love her any less! Thank you so much again! God Bless!
