Just to Clarify, this is for a book, and I need help with genetics! If the father of the kittens is a ginger tabby, and the mother is a brown tabby, what fur colour would the kittens have?

Red is sitting on the Y kromosome, so boys cant become red from daddy.  But some girls may be red.

Brown tabby is diluted black, I think, so they may carry black - as it is or diluted, ie grey or brown.

All will be tabbies as both momma and daddy is.

As I remember, a grey tabby whom is blue striped is called for blue, a grey tabby with visibley darker stripes is called for brown.

Lets hope more forumists answer too.   Im not that great on the colors.

The girls would be torties/calicos, possibly torbies (tortie/tabby)---no other possibilities; they would get red from dad and dark from mom. The boys would be brown tabbies (most likely) or solid black (not as likely but a possibility because solid is recessive and can pop up randomly).

The amount of white on them would depend on how much white the parent cats have.

I'm not sure what kind of book it is. If it's just to make sure the details are okay, then the following is your answer:

Girls - Black Tortie Tabby

Boys - Black (/Brown (Brown tabby is just another word for warm black tabby)) Tabby

If you are writing a book on genetics, it would be best to have more details. Aside from what you see (the genes that show), there can also be recessive genes underneath. In this case, if both parents carry the following recessive genes, it would also be possible for the kittens.

- Dilution (if both carry, also possible: Blue Tortie Tabby girls and Blue Tabby boys)

- Point (if both carry, all mentioned colors with 'Point' added after it (eg. Black Tortie Tabby Point)

- Non-tabby (if both carry, all above mentioned colours but remove 'Tabby')

Then there's also colors such as Chocolate and Cinnamon, but those the parents also both need to carry to be able to get - it's not common so I would ignore this for now.

If you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM ^^
