Hello all,
Last week, after a long illness my beautiful and sweet main coin "Kota" was put to sleep and for the first time in nearly 2 decades I cried...a lot
But life without a feline is empty so I decided that my next cat would be a rescue cat.
After looking at many cat and wanting to save them all, I found " Blue" an American shorthair at the local shelter.
It wasn't so much me picking him as it was him picking me... I mean when he starts purring and wants a belly rub....[emoji]128525[/emoji]
When I had to leave he stod up,looked at me with big round eyes and cried....I was sold!

So in my heart he's the cat I want, but there's a thing that I worry about....
Blue is around 4-5 years old and before he came to the shelter he was subjected to a trial involving interferon
at a university hospital.
The leader of the shelter couldn't really tell me anything further, except that during Blue's stay at the shelter (roughly 8 months) he has been an active and happy cat and apparently the only effect from the experiment has been that he at time will get a runny nose.
A runny nose I can deal with, but I am worried that there might be more severe side effects....but that is of course very difficult to predict.

What do you say?
Should I adopt him or..?

Many regards

Of course, he chose you! I hope someone can answer your questions about the interferon, the runny nose may be due to a lowered immunity and L-lysine can be given to boost the immune system of cats. I buy mine on Amazon as treats, but I'm sure you can get it from your vet or at pet stores. I'm surprised the shelter can't answer more questions, but I have a feeling if the hospital stay would have severely compromised him in some way they would have euthanized instead of letting him go to be adopted, it would be a black mark against them. No matter how long you have with him, and no one can predict how much time we will have with any of our little ones, it would be worth the happiness and love he can bring to your home and your heart. He can share your life and fill your heart with sunshine.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of Kota, but you already can feel that sweet cat approving of your decision to pass on the legacy of love that was left to you. In this way you honor the love and the bond that will exist forever between you both. Your heart is big enough to love again, never the same, but like a mother with many children, all loved but in their own unique way.

You will be blessed for loving this new little one, he needs you desperately to show him the world is not such a cold uncaring place. Take care and keep us posted!

Thank you so much for your reply and your condolences
It means a lot!

Yes, we never know how long we have together with our furry companions...Kota only graced this world for two and a half year... which was much too short.

Regarding Blue he has tested negative for FIV, but if I understood it correctly (Japanese medical terms are not my forte) he is positive for FHV virus.
From my understanding though, it's relatively manageable and rather common among shelter cats.

Tomorrow I'll contact my vet and ask him his opinion and also hopefully get a more detailed explanation from the shelter.

I'll keep you updated.
And here's a picture of Blue...isn't he just gorgeous?!

Blue is very handsome. Hopefully he will soon make his way into your home.

BTW, I absolutely love Japan. Spent about 9 days in Tokyo and can't wait to get back. Easy flight from Vancouver!
