Hey Everyone,

I just got a cat a few weeks ago and am new to this whole litter box thing. I have a hooded cat litter and she does great with it. The room where her litter is does not have any issues with odor and I am very pleased about that. Here is my dilemma.  I've been scooping out my cat's litter once a day if not twice a day. I scoop her litter into a TWO walmart/grocery bags and double knot both bags then I will put this bag in my big kitchen trash can. I usually don't take my kitchen trash out until it's full which is every couple-few days (I live alone so I don't generate much trash). The issue is, the trash can starts to reek of cat poop/litter within a couple hours of me putting it in there no matter how many smaller bags I use (I've even tried scented small bags). I live in an apartment and the dumpster for my apt complex is a good ways away from my apartment. I know this sounds extremely lazy of me, but am i stuck with having to walk my kitty litter trash out all the way to the dumpster every time I empty her litter? Anybody have any tips/suggestions on what they do?

Thanks,

Sarah

I use a plastic bucket with a tight lid, actually a bucket that kitty litter came in. Line it with an Odor Block plastic garbage bag, doesn't need to be scented. They're kind of expensive but really do cut the odor. I just keep adding to it until it's full, then take it out to the dumpster. You wouldn't necessarily have to fill it up if weight is an issue for you to carry.

I use a plastic garbage pail with a tight lid - a small "Oscar-type" trash can - and odor-blocking trash bags. It works better than the Litter Lockers we had in the past, and there's no need to buy special refills. Many people use diaper pails.

Having an outside dumpster must be a pain, especially if the weather is bad and you just don't want to go outside. Try sprinkling the clumps with baking soda or one of those heavily perfumed litter box deodorizers before you close up the bag. That will help keep odors down in the trash can or bucket.

I used to have small boxes & scooped them out all the time, I hated it. I went to walmart & bought a really big, deep plastic storage bin, it's 25 X 18 & I clean it out every few days. Since I'm doing it less frequently, the bag gets full, I take it to the trash, I'm done. No smell, the kitties have ample place to do their thing, some scratch way down, some don't.

If you don't want to get a bigger box, another thing I used to do is scoop the stuff out, tie the bag shut, don't knot it & then keep it next to the box until it's full so you can take to the trash. I would feel bad if I was only scooping a little bit & then throwing away in a plastic bag, I mean what a waste. I like to get the bag totally full, almost to the breaking point before I dump it.

Hi, Yep, I pretty much have the same suggestions. I also live alone, so trash is only full every few days. I would just buy one of those small trash cans w/ a lid to put the poop bags in, then empty it when you take the trash out. I used to use a small plastic container that used to be an Epsom salt container, & that worked fine. You can put one of those boxed of baking soda for the refrigerator in there as well to help w/ the smell. I just put the pee bags in the regular trash, because they didn't smell. I called the container "The poopy pale."

The litter genie is nice if you can afford it, & the refill bags. Funny, I was a nanny years ago, & used a diaper genie, & thought of that idea too. Too bad I didn't do it before the person who came out w/ it did!!!  I didn't have a cat back then, so... When it came to me, was too late, ..of course. :)

I definitely recommend the Litter Genie. Cats have a much better sense of smell, so they may think your home stinks of their waste if it's not contained well. Otherwise, I recommend a one gallon size trash can with a lid like this one from IKEA. You can keep it next to the litter pan, line it with small trash bags, and dump the bag once a week.

I live along also, and have one cat in an apartment.

I love the Litter Genie.. it is worth the investment..I empty it every 5 days.. it gets full pretty fast. No one can smell 'cat' in here unless it is time to change out the litter and wash the box....

I also use Precious Cats (blue box) cat litter. It lasts 3 weeks for me...

I wash the litter box out with the Blue Dawn soap. If it is a warm, sunny day, I let it air dry on my balcony...

The best scoop I have found is called a "Litter Lifter" . I got it at Petco, but I do not think they sell it anymore. You can order it from Amazon...

Good Luck, and love your kitty...

I use flushable litter.  I flush any poo away. The wee is bagged and put in the bin.

That's great! Which litter is flushable? I rent, so I'd be a little scared to do that. It's an older house too.
I personally use Worlds Best Cat Litter, in the Green or Red bag.  It's not the best but it does breakdown and flush nicely.  It's not the best with odor, especially in the humid weather, the corn hold the moisture, but being in an apartment myself, it's easy.  My hubby does go in and out, so I have used regular clumping and bag it, and we toss outside almost every time my gal goes, but I'm finding the regular clumping (most brands) are scented very strong, too strong for my nose, and I'm finding the wet clumps, to be very slimy.  And when it's time to clean the box, I'm finding the littler very sticky, almost concrete like.

That's just my experience.  I was going to try the Precious Cats litter that @Artiemom  recommended above.

They use Sweat Scoop at the Humane Society. While it is really light weight, I do not think it has the odor absorbing function.. and my guy, who is a heavy digger, would have it all over the place...I also do not care for the smell of it... it smells nasty to me...

Yes, Precious Cats does clump very hard and very fast.. and it lasts a long time..I just add to the box and do a complete clean and empty every 3 weeks..anything longer and it starts smelling...

A lot of litters are way too scented to me as well, so I can just imagine how strong they are to the cats.
I've been using this one. It's a corn base as well w/ natural pine scent. It seems to be very, low dust, if any, & clumps pretty good. Also works pretty well as far as smell.
I found it at Walmart only 5.98 for this 10lb bag.

@Angels mommy  - Please forgive me if wrong, but the fact you need litter, does that mean you've adopted another kitty.  I need to check out your threads.  I'm so excited...

Pllus, I'll check out this litter as well.  thx for sharing.

I didn't think I was ready yet, but I will always miss Angel,
as we had such a special bond, & he was such a special boy!  I also wanted to be able to go out of town, if the opportunity was there, & for financial reasons.

But, I guess as the sang goes, We make plans, & God laughs!  I think think the little neighbor calico girl was sent to soften me up!  I think God & Angel were up there planning it all!

I finally made it official, so to speak, & posted about it. here is the link that tells the whole story.
(I guess I finally gave in to the fact that I really had no say in the matter!)
Still feels a little weird though...
