Hi everyone! I am a third year veterinary student hoping to design a new mobile app for pet customers to help them choose pet food. I think pet nutrition is a incredibly important, growing area and pet owners want to know where their dog's food is coming from and how it's made. I want to create an app written by nutritionists WITHOUT pet nutrition companies promoting their food specifically. There would be a questionnaire section about your pet to help choose an appropriate food as well as articles written by nutritionists about ingredients to avoid, common misconceptions, etc. I would love to get anyone's input on this product, specifically: 1. Would you be interested in this product? 2. If so, what types of features do you think should be included? 3. What would you want to know more about in terms of your pet's health and nutrition? Thank you for all your help with this! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email! Best, Lauren

I personally wouldn't use an app, my phone already has apps sucking the battery life.  Perhaps on my tablet.  Not sure.

I would however, read with much interest a webpage or blog with this information all in one place.  I've started keeping my own logs on different foods.

Good luck, I'm sure many out there would be interested.

Like the person above just said- I probably wouldn't download an app because of the phone battery draining but I would be interested in reading all the info on a website.  Features that would be interesting would be creating on-going polls that site visitors could vote on, such as: what brands people highly prefer, and which brands people think are bad, ect.  And maybe a few different pet nutritionists could create their own 'top 10 recommended brand' guide list and give pros and cons of each and top 10 to avoid list or something along those lines.  I know something like that would definitely have helped me 2 months ago when I got my kitten,  but instead I had to research all over many different sites.  These message boards have been very helpful too though.

Personally, I WOULD download an app so I could have it handy when shopping, and I would be interested in being able to key in a specific food and getting nutritional information back, such as the amount of carb on a dry matter basis, the amount of phosphorus, magnesium, that sort of thing.  Even calories.  Sometimes you can't even get that information direct from the manufacturer!

I think it would be nice of people with cats with health issues (kidney disease, FLUTD, heart disease, etc. could key in the condition and get recommendations.

As far as articles by nutritionists about ingredients to avoid, common misconceptions, etc., I think we've all read those already and have access to plenty of that type of articles.

You know there's an app I use for myself called Fooducate that has the nutritional value of different foods, all you have to do is scan the bar code of the item and the info pops up. That would be a nifty feature to have for cat food, I'd download that.

This is great feedback everyone, thank you so much! I'm thinking perhaps a website and an app then would be useful tools. My thoughts with an app was that it would just be more convenient so that people could easily scan the barcode on the foods and see the ingredients, reviews, etc. They could also see if it was a veterinarian recommended product or not.
