I may be adding a 3rd cat. If all goes well, she'll be joining the family (you can see the topic in Stray Cats and Ferals if you're curious).

My current two has been doing very well on one box. I know I have to add at least 1 more, if not 2 with the new momma.

I have a place for it in my bedroom, however, I'd like to place it in my closet next to the other one to keep it out of sight and contained.

In my hallway, I have a hall closet- it's a double door type. On the opposite side of the closet is my bedroom, where I had cut a hole in the wall for the cats to utilize the box.

I'd like to place a second box in the closet, using half that closet (other half is storage and I'll be blocking it off with plywood) and not expand the hole. There's one box in the closet that is covered. I am planning on uncovering it where the cats can easily get to two boxes. However, they MAY have to step in one box to get to the other.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this plan? or should I get a box that'd fill the entire half closet instead of having two? or should I just put the box in the corner of my bedroom and forget about it?

First let me say, that's a very crafty idea having a hole like that with the litter box out of sight.  Nice...

I personally would put a bigger littler box and just have one.  It would probably be easier for you and they can pick their own corners so stepping in it may be slightly cleaner than stepping over one box to get to the other.

There was a member way back who suggest another member go to home depot or bed bath and beyond and get one of the under bed storage containers, rubbermaid etc...

Hope this helps.

thanks for your input!

I was thinking about those under bed storage containers. I have one that's pretty shallow and will work

I usually do what Jackson Galaxy recommends by placing them (covered with a top of course) all throughout the first floor of my house.  That way, it doesn't disturb my non cat loving guests and my cats remain social and happy.

whatever works best for you & is out of the line of traffic for the kitties. I used to keep mine in the closets as well. I would definitely have at least 2 boxes with 3 cats. I have 3 cats & have a 19 gal, 25 X 18 plastic storage container I got at walmart. I needed something deep because my one cat used to hang over the edge when pooping so I wanted to make sure her butt was contained. When I used to have a house I had 2 litter boxes, now I only have one but because it's so large & they all go at different times & I clean it out frequently, I haven't had a problem. When I get another place that has more bedrooms, I will have 2 boxes again.

I think you're on the right track with what you're doing.

Cool set up !  I use 1 litter box for 4 cats. I don't have room for another one . It works out find, no accidents and all the cats get along just find.

I scoop several times a day and change it  2 times a week.

Could you not have another box facing the other way and put a door in the closet door like you've made in the wall?

Then you have the benefit of two different boxes should anycat decide to be fussy.

I'd rather not ruin the closet door. I only made the hole in my bedroom since it's out of sight and company don't see it unless I show them. they'd see it in the closet door.

good idea though!

I would go with 1 large litterbox made from a Larger platic tote (large/tall enough for your cats to stand in + 4-6 inches of litter. You can keep the lid on it to make it more enclosed if you wish. It is very easy to cut a hole in the side of the tote. This way you have ample litter for 3 cats and you can cut the door exactly where it needs to be.
