our 17 yr old neutered male has had a wound on inside rear right leg for months. It is about 1" X 1/2" in the fold between leg and groin. I have no idea where it came from. When I first discovered it before Xmas, the vet said it had healed/scabbed and gave no treatment or RX...but it wasn't healed...it stayed what I considered " raw" but the vet calls granulated tissue...this is like "proud flesh" that people can get which prevents a wound from healing to normal skin or scar.. Initial antibiotic didn't work...cultured it and came back staph-resistant.
Vet RX subcu antibiotic that damaged his kidneys...found that out at different vet in FL where our vacation home is...required ER care w/24 HR fluids IV and wound was secondary.
After health stabilized from CKD, we tried laser therapy, topical antibiotic, and debreiding the area w/provident iodine, and also using SSD ointment from middle of June to end of August Second culture then showed no more staph-resistant bacteria but one that Doxycycline could treat. He also had Pillow foot at that time which responds to Doxy. After about a month the pillow foot is gone but the wound is still granulated and about the same size.
He seems to be doing ok re the CKD...he is not getting subcu fluids...is on wet diet w/RX food and low phosphorus food, hard boiled egg whites, clam juice, and xtra water...and he drinks a couple of times a day...not losing weight...so CKD seems under control...
But I really want this wound to heal...it is in fold of his right rear leg and hidden unless he really opens it up to clean...
he is not good candidate to surgically excise the area and stitch it up because of the general anesthetic and also it still has active bacteria apparently...
Any suggestions? Anyone whose cat has had a granulated wound that refused to heal?
Our FL who discovered the kidney problem and who seems more clued up than the first one doesn't want to try any steroid meds bcuz of kidney problem.
