Hello everyone,

My sister found an abandoned kitten behind her house on Monday. We waited for the momma, but she never returned. So my sister decided to take on the task of fostering this little baby, though none of us have ever done this before. Since I've never done this before, I may provide too much info, but let me give you just a little breakdown of the past few days:

Based on her looks, we think she's between 2-3 weeks old. Eyes open, folded ears, crawling. I'll include a picture in case anyone wants to see.

Monday: We had trouble getting her to eat at first. We didn't have the right kind of bottle, though we used KMR. The first day we maybe got her to eat about 30cc which we knew wasn't nearly enough. She weight about 7 ounces. She had an eye infection in one eye. We focused on trying to keep her warm.

Tuesday we got her to eat maybe 40 or 50 or so cc (we weren't keeping a record yet). We had her setup with a heating pad to keep her warm and a stuffed animal for comfort, fed her every couple of hours, burped her, helped her use the bathroom, etc. We found fleas. She pooped. Minimal weight gain.

Wednesday we got a flea comb, washed the bedding, brushed off most of the fleas. The eye infection spread to the second eye. She ate about 60cc. We had the right kind of bottle now. She slept most of the time when she wasn't eating, but would wake up hungry. She pooped and peed all on her own in her bed (does that mean she's a little older than we think? Did we not help her enough to go?) Didn't weigh.

Today (Thursday): Got terramycin from the vet for her eyes. They already look better. She's wanting to eat 10-15cc (or more) at each feeding, maybe more. She's probably up to 60-65cc now just today and she'll be fed at least one more time tonight. I wouldn't be surprised if she hits 75cc. Her weight shot up to 8.9 ounces. We think we might see some tiny little teeth in her mouth. She's still really wobbly when she walks. Doesn't seem to have a lot of strength or coordination in her back legs.

I have a couple of questions. We know it's important not to overfeed so she doesn't get diarrhea. But she is so insistent when we feed her. She bites on the nipple if we try to take the bottle away and she kind of claws at it desperately when she's still trying to get milk out and doesn't want to stop.

Is it normal for a kitten to seem like they're starving even if they're eating enough food according to their body weight? Should we be concerned about her sudden burst in weight? I know kittens grow quickly, but it just seems like a lot.

She purrs when we burp her and after she eats. She seems okay other than the very insistent meowing and the way she acts like she's starving even though we feed her. The KMR says 8cc per ounce but we didn't know she would jump up 2 ounces in 3 days.

I've heard that you can't overfeed kittens, but I have never bottle raised a kitten so I'm probably just talking out my butt.  Good luck!

If the kitten wants to eat more, that's great. Is she eliminating normally?

2 ounces in 3 days is good, above the average, but not unheard of.  I suppose you are doing everything just so, keeping warm, companion animal, good food often enough, etc...    :)   You do it alike two pros!   Here we do see, lotsa of good will, effort and some love, does works miracles!

Tx for helping this little sis of ours!

Good luck - and please continue to report and ask questions!

even if nothing much happens.

Feed as much as she wants! She is growing quickly and needs the food.

She sounds about 3 weeks old. At 2 weeks they should weigh 8 ounces; 12 ounces at 3 weeks, and 16 ounces at 4 weeks; then continue to gain 1 pound a month for the first 6 months. Baby teeth are in by 4 weeks.

The 8mLs per ounce is a guideline for the minimum amount that kittens need to thrive. Many need more.

It sounds like you are doing a stellar job with her! Keep it up! [emoji]128522[/emoji]

Pretty sure they can be overfed, so I'd look into worming and parasites
That's something to do when she's older unless the OP is seeing symptoms. Kittens eat a lot. They should eat as much as they want.

We weighed her yesterday and she was up to 9.6 ounces. We can see a lot of her teeth growing in. She pees on her own, though we still try to get her to go before and after eating to avoid that since she seems to do it mostly while she is sleeping (but not always).

She did poop yesterday too, and she didn't have diarrhea so that made us feel better.

She gets so excited when the bottle comes out, like she is starving still. She claws at the bottle so desperately, and we are afraid she's going to scratch her eyes. She eats about 12cc-15cc at a time, till her little tummy is pretty round and she stops sucking.

We have found that she likes to suck on the skin between our thumb and forefinger. It calms her down and she'll fall asleep.

She will get wormed but we thought it was too early.

There was no way we could leave her outside alone. She wouldn't have made it, she was so young. But it's a scary thing! She is the cutest little thing though and we are just trying to do what's best so she can thrive.

Thank you so much for your help everyone!

We weighed the kitten yesterday and she jumped up to 11.6 ounces! She has almost doubled in size since we found her. She used to fit in one hand pretty easily, and now she requires two hands to hold.

She seems to be a little constipated so we put a couple drops of olive oil in her formula. We are hoping that helps her go.

Her formula intake shot up as well -- she went from about 15cc per feeding a couple days ago to wanting more like 25cc now. I think all of her teeth are in. We are thinking it may be time to try to transition her to slightly more solid food. Maybe she won't feel so hungry all the time! And maybe it will help with her going to the bathroom like she needs to.

I have a couple questions about this since I've read a lot of conflicting info. Is Gerber 2nds a good starter, mixed with KMR formula, just to get her something soft and hopefully interested in? I know it doesn't contain all the nutrients cats need, but it has no onion in it and its short list of ingredients is appealing (I fed it to my kitty when he had liver cancer and stopped eating all his regular food).

Assuming that is acceptable to start with and she takes to it, what canned food would you recommend for a kitten this young? My sister doesn't want to feed her cheap food that's not good, but she can't afford the most expensive food out there either, especially with how she's eating right now! Is it okay if the food contains liver, or by-products? All the cans of food we were looking at the store seemed to contain one or both of those things, and my sister read somewhere they should not be fed non-meat (i.e., organs, or by-products)

We are also just about at the stage of needing to start litter training. I know clay litter is bad. Any litter recommendations?

Thanks again for all your help! We're just trying to help this baby thrive and grow into a happy, healthy kitty cat!

Gerber turkey or chicken baby food is a great way to transition to solids. I used it with my kittens. It's full of protein and easy to eat and digest.

It's good her weight is up. If she has all her teeth she's around 4 weeks old, and so should weigh about a pound. She should continue to gain a pound a month for 6 months at least. Feed unlimited food for now, including dry kitten chow.

I like Fancy Feast wet food. They make a kitten formula in turkey and fish, and it's also very soft. Their adult Classic pates are also good - meat is the first ingredient, as opposed to by-products.

Cats do eat meat. They are carnivores, so poultry and beef are excellent choices. Small amounts of organ meat, such as liver, are not harmful and are iron-rich.

Non-clumping litter is recommended while they are little, in case they eat it. I used Tidy Cats, which comes in clumping and non-clumping.

In Sweden we often use minced meat (but not pork) as our first real food for kittens.  Of course we dont have Gerber brand here, so our choice is limited.   :)

Real food is more energy tight than kmr or goats milk, so when she begin to eat wet food or other foods, she will nod need the same amounts measured in cc...

Thanks so much for all this advice everyone. We think she must be trying to make up for lost time, because today she weighed 12.3 ounces. The olive oil in the milk definitely helped her along too, but we're going to have to keep doing it because she's definitely constipated. I hope once she starts eating something other than the KMR, it'll help.

I will keep you guys up to date and let you know if we have any further questions. You guys have been a huge help (in this thread and in others)!

Hello everyone.

We found an abandoned kitty a few weeks ago and have been caring for her. She's over a pound now, playful, trying to pounce and play. We are starting to run into some problems though.

We have had hard poop from her pretty much since the beginning, despite adding a few drops of olive oil to her bottles. We were hoping things would regulate better once she started transitioning to soft food. However, she is crying out terribly when she tries to poop. She went yesterday, but she cried the whole time.

Now she fights us on even trying to help her pee (and we are only doing that still to try to teach her to do it in a litter pan, because she can go on her own). She will not poop on her own.

I've read a few things - miralax, canned pumpkin, massaging olive oil or Vaseline on anal area - are any of these effective on a kitten this young? Is Miralax actually safe?

She's been eating an increasing amount of baby food & wet kitten food, but seems to be struggling even more than she was on just the powder formula alone.

She does not appear to be overly bloated at this point but I know she needs to go, because she tries to push and makes the most awful cries as she does. She is biting a lot, mostly for play I think, but I wonder if she could have some discomfort in her tummy too.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

If she is crying when going to the bathroom and nothing is working to make her go she needs to be seen by a vet. Thank you for taking her in she's adorable!

I suggest that you buy infant glycerin suppositories. Cut off a tiny piece from one of the suppositories, and insert it. It should bring on a bowel movement.

If she is consistently constipated, then she is not getting enough liquid. You should continue offering kitten milk so she gets her fluids. The constipation should get better as she gets older.

I hope this helps!

I ended up taking her to the vet. It was my last day at my sister's before heading home, and things had gotten worse. I was concerned about her being impacted.

Vet gave her an enema and some laxative to take home. Took about 2 hours and then boy did she go! After that, she stopped fighting us when we would help her go pee, so she clearly feels better.

She has finally learned to lap up some water too so I think they wl start trying to do litter training tomorrow, once they feel certain she's not having any discomfort anymore!

Sweet picture! [emoji]128149[/emoji]

I'm glad you went to the vet. Hopefully, she will continue to go regularly now. [emoji]128522[/emoji]
