Hi all, just wanted to ask a question. My 8 year old intact male cat Gustav seems to be having frothy urine.

I tried to collect a urine sample from him to test for protein but he wouldn't use the nonabsorbent littler I put out for him. I got Vetstix 11 to test the urine but he's too smart; he could tell something was up so no sample.

He's acting fairly normal. He eats and doesn't puke. He's never indicated he's in pain. He drinks water. He doesn't seem to have difficulties urinating. He shows no signs of jaundice. He does not urinate outside the box, so far as I can tell.

I do live in a third floor apartment in Florida and it can get a little warm up there (we do have a/c, yes, and run it 24/7 - there's no living in Florida without air conditioning) and I think the heat and his age make him just a little slower to move around than he used to be. He generally seems alert and interested in everything around him. I've noticed when we get rain and the weather cools a bit, he seems a bit more perky. I keep three bowls of water handy for him at all times, and make sure he has access to fresh water everywhere.

He never goes outdoors; we have a pet flap that allows him to go sit on our screened porch, but that's as close to "outdoors" as he gets. He's had no interactions with other cats since he was a baby. Or dogs.

I may run him into the vet to see what's wrong...anyone had any experience with this?

Has he had issues in the past, is that why you have test strips handy, etc?  None of my males have ever had any issues, thank goodness, so I really don't have any experience with what urine might look like if there is an issue, but it doesn't sound like he's acting as if there is a problem, and that's what people usually go by.  Maybe you could just call your Vet and ask if this could be a symptom of something?

Had him tested. All is well. He's just fine.

I'm guessing this might simply be an interaction of the urine with the litter.
