Hi,I brought a new kitten home 3 days ago he is 5 weeks old and suddenly has black poo. He is fine in himself playful eating no apparent distress however after looking up that it could more than likely be a bleed I rang the vet she said well it could be a number of things don't worry and heresee an appointment for in a few days. But I am stressed as hell after reading how serious this could be does anyone have any experience with this what did it turn out to be and what can I do to tell if it's life treating? Thank you so much in advance to anyone who help just I have 2 other cats and never had anything like this

First thing: Breathe!!  also, did you make an appointment to see a Vet? You really need to do that either tomorrow or the day after.. even if the poop returns to normal.

Did you change his diet? I mean are you feeding a different type of food than what he had at the shelter?  That could change his poop.. or it could be worms.. watch him closely for any change in behavior...

I would keep him separated from your other cats, until you find out what is going on..

Remember to bring in a fresh stool sample when you see the Vet.

Playing and acting normal is good. Just keep an eye on this kitten..and take him to the Vet...

any others with advice?

It could be from bleeding in the digestive tract or bowels. It could also be from dehydration. Don't panic yet.

How soon is the vet appointment?

What is your little guy eating? That sometimes accounts for the color.

Paige267,

sathur2 is right. It's bleeding in the digestive tract. Don't be alarmed. It can be treated with medication.

My boy vomitted dark bile that smelled like blood and his poo is tarred color. Went to the vet and it was GI Ulceration. Got a jab for vomittng and medication and after a few days, no more vomittng and poo went back to normal.

If you can, don't wait for the appointment date, walk in and wait for your turn.

I did not say it's from bleeding. I said it could be.

Refrigerate the stool sample. Good you are going in tonight!

Worms are easily treatable. In fact, almost all kittens have them.

I'm really thinking it's from the change in food. Is he getting enough fluids?

Since he's only 5 weeks old, he should be drinking kitten formula still. Can you get a powdered brand, such as PetAg formula, and give him 2-3 dishes a day? He needs the special nutrition it contains. A kitten this age is normally still nursing mom.

Do let us know what the vet says!

You should go to the vet and he should be dewormed, but I wanted to mention that kittens do eat a lot! How much and how often are you feeding him? Is he getting wet food?

Thank you all. Well I'm feeding him a 1\4 wet pouch 3 times a day but he eating left overs from his brothers. Ok so can I buy this formula in a supermarket? And can the worms be dangerous? He always has water and I have seenot him drinking. If it is bleeding how serious is it? Thanks ks you all so much

Feed your kitten wet food 6 times a day. He should also have access to dry kitten kibble 24/7. It is next to impossible to overfeed a growing kitten. They really do eat a lot, and need it to grow on.

Some worms can be dangerous, but are easily treated.

Let's not speculate on bleeding before your vet appointment.

Kitten formula is available in pet shops and at vet offices.

Glad it's just worms! He needs a follow-up tablet 2 weeks from today.

Do increase his food, and get the formula! [emoji]128522[/emoji]
