Hello everyone,

I’ve been readings a lot of the cooked/raw threads the past few days and I have a few things I’m uncertain about.

But let me give you a little background first:

I’ve been fostering kittens from the local kill shelter since I was able to rent a house with my roommates sophomore year of college. They’ve always transitioned from KMR to wet, to dry/wet combo before they got adopted. Last year one of the kittens I fostered came back to the shelter and I took him as a foster again, except this time he’s not going anywhere because he’s the most awesome cat ever
. However, Nugget has chronic rhinitis (I’m not sure whether due to allergies or virus, etc as I haven’t had the money to take him to a specialist yet).

 1) I’m wondering if anyone on here has cats with chronic rhinitis and has seen an improvement in their cats once you transitioned from commercial food?

I also took in a litter of 6 kittens about 4 months ago. They were too little to be tested at the time I took them, but right before they were supposed to be placed at an offsite adoption center, they all came back positive for FELV. So the gang is staying with me and Nugget for at least another month before they can be retested and placed up for adoption. I am feeding and scooping poop A LOT. This is the first time that I've had a litter that's FELV+, 2) does anyone have experience with homemade diets and FELV? I’m obviously not expecting it to be a miracle cure by any means, but I think it could help their little immune systems to be off of the dry stuff.

I just graduated from grad school and I’m starting my own practice, so the money situation is super tight right now. I’ve had to rely on some donated kibble and friskies cans, which is less than ideal. I cannot afford high quality canned food at the moment, so I’m hoping to cut a bit of the cost by leaving a small portion of dry around for them to nibble on, a few friskies cans, and adding in cooked food. I think relying on just cooked food for 6 growing kittens is going to get super expensive, but I am open to any suggestions you guys have!

I’ve ordered a sample size of U-Stew to add to the cooked meat, but today I did some math and it’s going to be a lot cheaper to buy the supplements separately and add them according to the recipes on the cooked diet thread.

I think I know the answer to this, but want to double check anyway lol 3) If the cooked food makes up about 50% of their diet, with 30% wet and about 20% kibble, I should still make sure that the cooked diet is balanced in regards to all of the supplements, correct? I added a bit of cooked chicken (got it to 160* and took it off the heat) and egg to their wet food tonight and they seemed a bit surprised but everyone downed it, even Nugget

Sorry for the long winded post, but it’s been a long day and I don’t want to mess up and waste a bunch of food ha. Thanks so much!!

Personally I would make sure everything the cat eats is a complete diet, aside from treats and the occasional small piece of plain raw meat or organ.
