Hi

I noticed today that my pregnant kitty Meku began bleeding from her vagina. Obviously my first port of call was taking her to the vet.
The vet confirmed the kittens are still alive and active and measured them at being 41 days today, but they are unsure why she's bleeding.
They then called a reproductive specialist, who again had no particular insights.
They confirmed that it is not pyometra or any form of infection though her cervix is slightly open.
The blood appears is a darker colour almost like it's slightly clotted.
The bleeding has slowed since this morning.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had this happen and can give me any insights?

Thanks

She seems to be bleeding a bit heavier.
She's very content and is showing no behavioural changes, she's still eating and drinking. Currently she's asleep on the bed.
Any advice or any suggestions on anything I can do for her would be great :)

Earlier it was like a flow, which was when we went to the vets
It slowed
Went back to a flow for maybe 20 minutes and is now back to just spotting.

Yes I'll try and find another vet in the morning. It's 10pm here :).

Is there anything I can do for now to comfort her?

She is in my bedroom away from the other kitties, she's fast asleep and is showing no signs of distress, eating and drinking as normal, although I've not seen her use the litter tray yet

As of now the vet advice was just keep an eye on her and come back in a week for another ultrasound and that she's showing no signs of of being in labour

Are you in the US? Are you a breeder?

Heavy bleeding is not normal during pregnancy, and can indicate miscarriage of one or more fetuses. If it continues, something is not right. You do not want to endanger the life of the mother from blood loss.

Another opinion if she continues bleeding is essential.

No I'm in the uk
No I'm not although she is a pedigree cat and we thought to have one litter before spaying

She's been in the vets all day, the vets gave her the all clear to come home and assured me that her life was not endanger as its not an infection and to call if she got any worse, as it stand she's no worse, and has if anything improved slightly. I'm just worried as I know the bleeding is not normal, although as far as the vets said all kittens are still alive, active and the heart beats are strong

I will contact another vet first thing to get a second opinion

I'm just more concerned about her comfort tonight and If anyone has any suggestions or things to look our for particularly, I am concerned she may birth one or more of the kittens the best insight the vet gave was that she may be birthing a placenta.
Will labour signs be different if she is delivering them this early?

Labor may come on quickly if she miscarries. If a placenta has separated from the uterus or torn, it could cause the bleeding.

Let's hope the incident resolves, and everything will be fine!

Fingers crossed, should I allow her to lick away the blood or should I stop her with due to cervix being open?

No expert, but I would imagine it's ok for her to lick the blood. She would do this if she were outside to deter predators & she will eventually eat all the placentas.

Pregnancy can be a risky business. I'm glad you're giving her good veterinary care - even though it can get expensive. I don't mean to scare you but thinking maybe this will help -

No updates as of yet, nothing has changed over night.
She's a solely indoor cat and she's been separated from my other cats (all indoor cats as well) to ensure as little risk to her and the other cats as possible.

Waiting for some vets to open so I can try and get her another appointment

I've got the Krm on stand by incase any premature kittens were born alive!

Will keep updating :)

Also thank you Anne, not a scare at all, I'd much rather be clued up on all possibilities. Thank you the link has given me some reading to do!

We've seen someone else and they've said exactly the same thing
Although she's still bleeding it's just a waiting game to see if the kittens survive
So I've got an appointment for her to have an ultra sound on Monday and work from there really :(

Good! There needs to be an ultrasound done. She must be miscarrying a kitten. It's totally not normal to bleed this much.

Please update when you can.
