First, my wife and I are pleased with the vets who see our cats.

But it is always good to know when to turn when unexpected problems come up.

Are there lists of cat knowledgeable vets and advanced care facilities. For example, it would appear that Tufts University has an excellent program that deals in cutting edge treatments.

So, that sort of information is what I am looking to find.

Thanks,

Neal Lewis

The above link will help you find the nearest certified cat friendly practice in your area. I think that even if you are happy with your current vet it is good to check out a cat friendly practice. My vet only sees cats and the techs and vet recognize my cats when we come in. The nice thing about that is if/when my cats have something different the vet is familiar with their history, personalities and their normal baseline. I also know where the closest 24 hour vet is and where the further but more advance 24 hour vet is. My cats have had one exam at each of the 24 hours just to have a patient record and record of their normal vet on file so that in an emergency I am not filling out all that new patient information or having to remember details.

Kieka,

Thank you for the good internet source.

I found several vets reasonably close to where my wife and I live (within 25 miles) that appear to be cat friendly and knowledgeable.

I plan to contact some of them to see if any would be a good alternative.

Denice,

Thanks for your information.

I looked up the list.

Unfortunately, there are none any place close to where my wife and I live (Kansas).

So right now, the vets with Diplomate standing are not an option.

I am interested to find out the opinions of others with regard to Teaching Colleges that have programs involving cats. A Teaching College normally takes cases regular vet clinics will not take, with the understanding that the treatments may be experimental in nature

What Colleges do people recommend?

Thanks,

Neal

Vet colleges can be very good.  They all have their own rules as far as giving care to pets.  I am originally from Kansas.  I know Kansas State has a vet school.  We had an article referenced here not too long ago where they had cured a cat of FIP, something that had never been done before or at least had never been verified before.  Primary care is done by students under a professor's supervision and the professor steps in if necessary.  They are on the cutting edge of research but they also give routine care.

I think Vet schools are very good...We have Tufts Veterinary school nearby, and Angell Memorial Hospital is their Hospital and clinic....

They are really good. The students (Resident Doctors) are under supervision by an full fledged Vet and specialists..

They usually have the best care and are up to date on procedures and innovations...

I know they have specialists also, who see patients... the Residents are there to assist.. and they do seem to run the Emergency Room with a Specialized Vet supervising them...

They are not cheap though.. actually there is no Vet care that is cheap..
