My heart is breaking for my nearly 18-year-old Siamese, Misty.  She stopped eating Wednesday night and was hiding.  I got her to the vet Thursday morning.  They ran labs and gave her IV fluids.  She is a hyperthyroid cat and has been on methimazole 5-1/2 years now. Vet was sure her thyroid was probably just off.  Labs were all normal, including kidneys, liver, thyroid, etc.

Vet then recommended Cyproheptadine appetite stimulant and told me to give her one 4 mg tab twice daily.  I gave her 2 doses and she seemed wobbly.  After researching, I now think the dose was much too high.  Since it was Friday night after her second dose, I haven't been able to call the vet.  I have not given her any more of the med and she is eating now.

Misty was having some difficulty with arthritis, but it seems so much worse now.  I could never figure out if it was her right leg or hip, but her hips are so much worse now.  She can barely walk.  I am not sure if the cypropheptadine could have made her worse.  Only med vet ever offered me for arthritis was Metacam and said it was the only thing she used for arthritis.  I opted not to give it to her.

My heart is breaking because I don't know if she is suffering so much that I need to let her go.  She is now eating and purring when I pet her, but she is having difficulty walking and sleeping almost nonstop.  I have to wake her to feed and medicate her.

I did read a post from LDG that was in Feb 2016 talking about krill oil and curcumin for arthritis.  Can anyone comment on whether the curcumin is gel or powder.

I also thought maybe Misty is dying.  She got sick so fast and her eyes are glassy.  I don't know if it's arthritis or the end for her.  Either way, I need something to give her for pain.  I drove 30 miles today to pick up T-Relief and have given her one dose, so soon to tell if it's going to work.

Please pray for my Misty girl.  We love her so much.  I am crying nonstop and just want her to live the rest of her life pain free.  If I can't find relief for her soon, I fear we will have to euthanize her.  I can't even begin to think of how I would get through that.  I just want to know I do the right thing for her, not myself.

Ask your vet about giving glucosamine chondroitin to Misty for her arthritis. Cats seem to like the flavor so no problem dosing them. My elderly cat Mist had arthritis, so painful that she was bobbing her head with every step. The glucosamine chondroitn really helped. It takes a while to build up in their system.

My husband made several sets of little steps so Mist could get up on our bed, up on the sofa, up on my desk. As she got even older she didn't want to go upstairs to our bedroom, mostly stayed in my study with her litter pan, food dish, water bowl, a couple of beds. And me.

Here's the thread I made about Mist: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/287072/tired-old-cat

The brand of glucosamine chondroitin I got from my vet was Cosequin. Mist liked it. And it is safe at higher dosage while loading her system. She was started off on twice a day, and when she stabilized I dropped down to once a day.

I take glucosamine chondroitin for my aging knees, and if I've overdone things I just increase the dosage for a while.
