My 5 month old doesn't seem to be uncomfortable, but over the past month or two I've noticed that he's been getting hair balls and he has really smelly poop. He also meows whenever he uses the litter box, it's not like a cry or in pain it just sounds like he's announcing what he's doing, so idk if that's normal. Anyways when I first got him his waste was virtually odorless, but I'm not sure if that was just because of his age? I was feeding a combination of various wet food and nutro's chicken and rice kitten food. Since then I've switched to orijen, which smelled HORRIBLE, then I switched to merrick which is an improvement but his poop's still smelly. Also he's getting pickier with wet food so he hasn't been eating as much of it. :/ sometimes he would get sick of a flavor before the can was even finished. I would really like to be able to buy canned food by the case so I could save some money but I'm afraid of him refusing to eat it. Any tips??

If his poop is that smelly get him a fecal test he may have a parasite. Also he may have a food allergy. I would suggest a trip to the vet. Some cat's just prefer dry. I have one that does. She uses wet as a snack and dry as meals.

Any kind of vocalisation when using the box is a red flag to me - it so often means that the cat is, at the very least, uncomfortable when using the box. Frequent hairballs aren't good either - all cats get them from time to time, but if it's happening a lot then that can also be a sign that something isn't right. You need to get him checked out by a vet asap, just to be sure that there's nothing physical going on.[article="33155"][/article][article="32366"][/article][article="30078"][/article][article="32341"][/article]
With the food, if you can find a brand he likes, look out for mixed flavour cases. That way, you can take advantage of better prices without landing yourself with a load of food he won't eat. Go for smaller size cans too, so you can change up the flavour more often. Remember, too, that if he does go off a food, it doesn't mean he'll never like it again. My boy is very fussy, and he'll love a certain food for a while, then get bored of it. I never chuck out the remaining cans though - once he's not has it for a while he'll happily eat it again. This approach does require a fair amount of storage space though :lol3: [article="33011"][/article]
