My indoor cat has been going through cycles of tapeworms for a couple of years now. Ever few months I'll notice he's scratching again and then notice the rice-shaped bits of tapeworm stuck near his anus.

1) I've been to two different vets a total of three times. My cat has been given tapeworm/flea meds, both oral and on the back of the neck.

2) I rent a house and don't have much furniture, so vacuuming has been pretty easy. I know that there's flea eggs you need to vacuum, because they can hatch with more fleas with tapeworms and start the cycle back up. I vacuum every time.

3) I've also used two different flea sprays on the house.

4) My cat is now on Revolution too.

5) For what it's worth, I've never actually seen fleas in the house I rent/experienced any bites (nor have I seen fleas on my cat). I've gotten a flea light w/ sticky paper, and nothing turned up. So this makes me feel kind of crazy that my cat keeps getting tapeworm.

I feel crazy. I've done everything I've been told to do to prevent both fleas and tapeworms, and nothing seems to work. I'm scared that my cat's life expectancy is decreasing because he's constantly going through these tapeworm cycles (or perhaps, has never gotten over it and constantly had tapeworms for years).

What can I do???

It sounds like you've never really gotten rid of all the tapeworms. You should try pumpkin seeds! Get raw, hulled (green) pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitos. Grind them up in a coffee grinder or till fairly well ground then you can sprinkle some on dry food or mix with canned food. Pumpkin seeds have a chemical in them that is toxic to tapeworms and will get rid of them for good, plus the fiber helps to expel the dead worms. It is perfectly safe for pets and many like the nutty flavor. You can do this just as needed until you see no more eggs (segments) and you should actually see a clump of the actual worms (heads) in the stool when they die off. You can also mix it with their food long term for permanent protection. This has worked for me every time!  Good Luck!

If you hadn't mentioned your cat starts scratching, I would have thought perhaps he's catching a mouse or something and getting the tapeworms that way,  But the scratching does sound like fleas, that, together with the tapeworms.

Maybe something in this thread will be helpful in eliminating the fleas:
