How old is Ruby? Is she at a good body weight or does she need to gain some weight or lose weight? I read a few of your previous posts. Is Ruby still vomiting and having diarrhea? Were you able to take her to the vet?

IMO, for most healthy cats 1 TB of dry food plus 1.5 oz of canned food and a few treats twice a day is not enough food. I'd either increase the amount of meals daily with the same food amounts or keep it two twice a day with more food given, preferably canned.

Ruby is 10 pounds and 12 years old. We brought her to the vet and he was extremely rude. He told us that we shouldn't have brought her in, etc. We have an appointment with a new vet Monday.

If we give her any more food she doesn's eat it. We have to practically force her to eat that. Once she gets better we will raise it, How much more food would you suggest? Any tips?

Generally, an adult cat needs 15-25 calories per lb of bodyweight. [article="31116"][/article]

I agree with LTS3 LTS3 - as Ruby has a small appetite at the moment, I think adding in an extra meal or two is probably the best way to go :)

Ok for now just add an extra few meals. Keep the amount of food the same for each meal since Ruby isn't really eating much each time. Have you tried toppers to make the food more appealing? Crushed up treats, FortiFlora, tuna juice. etc often work.

We have an appointment with a new vet Monday.
Make sure your new vet does a full senior panel including tests for kidneys and thyroid. Cats over 10 are very susceptible to both diseases, and caught early they're very treatable.

I would take off some of the fish as too much fish can throw a body out of whack & if you're feeding it to her twice a day, that's a lot. There are freeze dried treats made out of rabbit, chicken, lamb that she might like, I just squish one or two on top of the kitties wet food & they gobble it right up.

I'd give her all different proteins & see what she likes. Most stores are good about returns if your pet hates any of it. Whatever she will eat, I'd feed, minus fish based food.

I already stated my opinion & see you're still feeding fish twice a day. I'm sure others will respond, sometimes it takes days

Unfortunately we can't go to the pets store to get new food without fish until next month ):

The important thing is to get her to eat enough quality food. IMO, fish-flavored balanced cat food is fine. You should opt for quality food but whether dry or wet is less of a consideration then getting her to actually eat enough food.

I agree with @missmimz  about the blood panel. At her age, she needs to be assessed for potential kidney/thyroid issues and her diet may need to be adjusted accordingly.

Dr. Rachel Boltz summed up the various dietary needs for cats with chronic health conditions, so as you can see there are some differences. Of course, you need a proper diagnosis before applying these adjustments.

Two things from your post.  First off, how did the new Vet visit go?

Second, you said "once she gets better".  What is wrong with her?  Does she already have something diagnosed?  I know you posted two other threads in Health, but never saw where you actually took her to the Vet and a determination was made.  Is she still having diarrhea and vomiting?

We brought her to the vet again, and he sent us home saying that nothing was wrong and I believed him. She started eating ago, stopped vomiting, and had heathy stool. But today, she had a sudden loss of energy... she didn't want to go on her morning walk which she always looks so forward to. She only ate a very little amount and drank a little. Then, about 5 mins ago she vomited up her breakfast and had diarrhea again. I don't know what to do!
I love her so much, and I ate to see her act like this! every vet trip costs about $200 were I live and both of the vet trips drew no conclusions! I want to bring her to another vet, but my parents said no. Please help

Did they run blood tests at the Vet?  She's a senior, and seniors often start developing heath problems that can't been detected without bloodwork.  At $200 per visit, I'm guessing they did.  If they weren't able to find anything clinically wrong with her, then I'm guessing it might be something in her food that's disagreeing with her.  Is it possible to try giving her ONLY wet food for awhile?  Or even try giving her only cooked chicken and WHITE rice for a couple of days just to let things settle down, and then start up giving her only WET food, and maybe only one type for just a little while to try to figure out which food is not agreeing with her.

For the chicken and rice, I would poach a boneless chicken breast in water.  don't use any herbs, onions or garlic.  just plain water.  Once it's cooked, as it's cooling, use that water to cook the white rice.  Shred the chicken and mix the two together, adding in some of the leftover broth if there is any.  You could even add in a probiotic if you have any (human is fine...maybe 1/2 capsule per serving of this chicken mixture)  As I said, try feeding this mixture to her for a few days to give her system a break.

If she does ok with the chicken and rice mixture after a few days, then I would probably feed her just the canned turkey cat food for a few days and see how she does.  If she does ok on that, then I would add in another of her canned foods and see how she does on that.  If at any time she starts vomiting and/or has diarrhea, I would immediately STOP whatever food was added and see if it stops.   In the meantime, I would NOT give her any of the dry food at all.   Also, depending on the size can, one 5.5 oz can should probably be enough, or  two 3 oz cans...of course, it really depends on what brands you are using, as calories vary greatly.

Keep us posted.
