Hi,

I take care of a sweet almost 5 month old kitten. He lives outside. Yesterday when he came at feeding time, he looked awful, strange and in pain. I took him inside for the night. He smelled like rotten garbage, was salivating excessively and quietly crying out. I suspected that he ate from the trash container (considering the smell) and ate a bad piece so I waited for him to throw up by himself - didn't happen. He spent the night cuddling in a corner of the room, shivering and had diarrhoea. The next morning I rush to the vet as he was obviously in pain and I knew this was not mild food poisoning. I told the doctors that he is poisoned, but they insisted it was a calicivirus, so they administered some liquid under his skin (although he was not dehydrated) and some analgetic, I stopped them from the diarrhoea medication as I was still suspicious of poisoning and wanted not to stop his body to flush out anything bad in case there was some. They rejected poisoning because he had high temperature, which in their words was a sign of no poisoning, and concluded their diagnosis as they found ulcers in his mouth. I asked if I can still give him peroxide to induce vomiting and if I can give him charcoal, they said that it was not such a good idea because of the ulcers, but would not hurt him that bad. We went home.

I didn't know back then that peroxide was not good in some cases of poisoning (like in case of caustic poisoning), so I took their word of "not such great harm" and gave him some immediately as we got back just in case. After 15 or so minutes he threw up only foam and a dead roundworm. After a couple of hours I gave him some charcoal, he threw up a little of it and screamed in pain. After a couple of hours he started to bleed from his nose. Salivating was not stopping, his nose was clogged with blood and he breathed beaten up through his mouth, he also could not drink but wanted to so I syringed some water in. He did not have eaten almost for 2 days at that point (as I feed him at night and in the morning), so I syringed him some milk. At midnight he threw up all the milk and charcoal. He didn't peed one time until this point and pooped only once - a tiny amount of diarrhoea. He still hasn't peed and is still drooling with clogged bloody nose, breathing like he is beaten up and rocking his body mildly forward!

From yesterday onwards he is in constant agony, getting severe as time progresses. Can't rest his head, squats all the time, rarely changing his location in the room, cries in pain, has cold paws and ears.

Frankly I didn't do anything to him that night because I though he would throw up by himself and would recover after a couple of days, and at the morning well because we were going to the vet and they can sure do better job than me. The whole time on the way there I though they can figure out what could have caused the poisoning (thinking garbage cans have so many things in there, although I know he never visited them in the past - he just waits for me to feed him, but still because of the smell I assumed he ate smth from there, now I know this is due to his sickness), and they quite stunned me with this virus thing and I took their word for it not insisting on stomach lavage or smth like that, even on vomit inducer. I am still unsure what the poison was but this is clearly poisoning. I remember though that the neighbours did some barbecuing 2 days ago and then cleaned their barbecue as it smelled of cleaner quite a bit. Maybe he licked some of the drippings... The poor dear is agonizing. Is there something that can be done after so long - now is the morning after 2 nights in a row of when I found smth was not right with him and took him inside (we were at the vet yesterday morning). Is there anything I can do, I suspect even the time I went to the vet was late? I think his mouth, nose and throat are burning in excruciating pain. Can some irrigation help at this point or is in vain? Help me!

Sorry for the disjointed info and bad English! Thank you!

Katie

I don't know if there's anything else you can do at this point but love him. He might not make it so just love him. I'm sorry this happened to him and you. :(

I would take the cat back to the vet (go to a different one if you can) and demand treatment or, if that is not an option, have the cat put to sleep since his is clearly in pain and suffering from it.

So sorry for your situation, but I agree with having him put down to end his suffering.

Thank you Sincerely to all of you who replied and to those who've read the thread! Unfortunately the little guy didn't make it. He passed away this afternoon, at home. May his Sweet and Gentle Soul Rest in Peace!

He was a Stoic and a Fighter that one!..

Thank you! And I’m so sorry if I caused some unnecessary drama with my somewhat panicky opening post! My English is not good.

All the best!

Katie
