Cat over grooming?

I am aware that this is not a medical site, I have read the rules I just would like advice or suggestions. My one cat has been scratching a lot mostly around the neck and keeps creating scabs which then cause hair to fall out. If you pet her sometimes a tiny clump of hair attached to the scab will come off easily. She is eating and drinking, still playful, a little less active though she is six. Today I looked at an area that I noticed had a bit less hair and found some yellow-red scabs which are different looking compared to the normal scabs I have seen before. She is an all indoor cat however we do have a dog. Any ideas on what may be causing this?

update: we took her to the vet, she is allergic to her litter and some of the carpet materials.

I'm so sorry no one responded to you, but so glad you got your answer from your Vet.  So what is your Vet doing to help alleviate the issue?  I know changing the litter is a pretty easy fix but ripping up carpet isn't that easy.  Did he put her on an anti-histamine, or steroid, or what?  And I'm extremely curious...HOW did he determine it exactly what she was allergic too?

The vet gave actually just told us to get her a wound cleaner meant for pets to put on her. They determined what she was allergic to based on the time it all began and what we had switched around that time. They all matched up, it began a few months ago around July when we switched the litter and got a decorative rug for the bathroom. We are pretty sure it is the litter but they suggested removing the rug for awhile just to be sure.

OK, deductive reasoning.  Makes since.  Keep us posted
