Hi all,

So I have two kittens.. well, more like my mom has two kittens since I no longer live with her, that I am a bit concerned about their weights. I feel as though they might be a little too heavy for their age. But I could be wrong!

So heres a bit of the backstory:

My mom was at a friends farm visiting when she saw that their pure bred Ragdoll had had kittens in the barn. It was late April and it was cold, rainy and just not a good place for newborns to be. Mom brought this up and her friend down played it and said that they were fine and that they were going to sell them for $500 a piece. Lo and behold a week later her friend called her and asked if my mom would like the two kittens because they were the only ones of the litter that were still alive and no one wanted them for that price. Mom brought them home the same day that I came home for college.

I brought them to the vet the next day because Dean, the white male, was sneezing, eyes were gooped shut, he was coughing up stuff and had bad diarrhea. Luna-bell, my female, was sneezing a little, was lethargic but overall pretty okay.  We guessed them to be around 5 weeks old. The vet was a little Leary and said they were probably just over 4 weeks and needed special care for the next upcoming weeks. I took on that role since I was the only one of my family that was familiar with cats. They both weighed about 0.75 lbs and I was given a special high calorie dense food and had to feed them three tablespoons a day. Fast forward two weeks and they were at their checkup. They now weighed 1.2 lbs and got their worm medication. Dean at this time was given antibiotic shot and some other type of medication to be placed in his eye daily because they figured that he had Feline Upper Respiratory Infection and that Luna also had a touch of it and they would essentially have it for the rest of their lives.

Dean got better, cuddlier and fatter. Luna got longer, skinnier (so we thought) and very rambunctious. Mom brought them to the vet about a week ago to get spayed and neutered. Dean weighs 6lbs 9oz and Luna-bell weighs 6lbs 2 oz. The vet said they were healthy... just very large. He said he expected them to pound on the weight in the next few months and to be large fat cats by the time they were a year.

My question is, do I have to be worried about their weight? I send my mom about $70 a month for them. I can't remember the brand but I know my brother picks it up at some whole food store and is called Holistic something. They eat about 40lbs a month of it (together.)

I have the pictures in order from the day we got them to the day they got their . They are 5 months old at this point. Using pictures to demonstrate both their growth and Deans illness

about ten minutes after we got them

Same day, before I cleaned his eye

This is how I would find him in the mornings

about two and a half weeks later, after he's been getting medicine placed in his eye daily

 about three weeks ago

right after their surgery, wouldnt let my mom bathe without them in there with her

again, right after surgery. Dean was feeling good.

Your cats look very healthy to me, and not at all overweight for 5 months old. Kittens grow very quickly during the first 6 months, and are expected to gain at least a pound a month. Males tend to be bigger than females.

Awesome that they were just spayed and neutered. You've done a superb job of bringing them to health.

Your male has large paws, so I suspect he will be a big cat once fully grown. Some males do not finish growing and filling out for close to two years.

They do not look like purebred ragdolls, but more like mixed tabby. They are beautiful!

The amount of food sounds fine. Do they ever get wet food or meat of any sort, such as boiled chicken?

You may find that they begin to eat less over time as their growth slows, and since being fixed.

I don't see any cause for concern here! [emoji]128522[/emoji]
