Any ideas on what this could be?

I've been to the vet so many times since April for 1 of my cats, a 12 year old male.

First, he licked some Precor IGR that hadn't dried completely and got pancreatitis. He was treated and quickly recovered. Then, he had problem teeth and had them cleaned and removed. He had a yeast infection in both ears, and he has had, since the end of August, hairball issues where he would temporarily not eat for half of the day, get Laxatone and then appear perfectly fine until the next week.

He seemed to have a hairball again last week (Friday) but started coughing and sneezing and, again, not eating. We took him to the vet again, she said it was an upper respiratory infection, gave him fluids and an antibiotic and he quickly seemed to get better later that day. She also said his belly felt fine, not swollen, checked his teeth and everything else appeared okay.

Today he is back to being sick again (lethargic, decreased appetite, coughed like he had a hairball yesterday). He is still under treatment (antibiotic shot and lysine) for the URI but was doing great until now.

He just had lots of bloodwork done on him and everything was great. So, I don't understand what's going on.

I think IBD could be a possibility and want to get him in for an ultrasound/xrays even though the vet said his abdomen felt okay. Something chronic is going on. It is just so strange. He eats a lot, is playful and happy one minute, then back to being lethargic and having a decreased appetite the next. There have been so many vet visits for him recently and it is overwhelming.

Please, if anyone has experienced anything similar, please chime in. Also, is an ultrasound best to diagnose IBD and would the symptoms go back and forth?

I've never had a cat appear perfectly fine, eat a lot and play one minute, then go back to being sick and back again repeatedly.

Thanks.

Update:

He threw up a large hairball and went back to eating fine and behaving normally again. I am going to schedule an ultrasound because obviously this is an ongoing issue now.

Did they test his thyroid and kidneys? What are you feeding him? Def could be IBD, and you may want to look at going with a homemade diet to treat that. I'd suggest you poke around this the raw feeding for IBD site and see if you can start implementing some things like probiotics of even homemade food.

I feed him a mix of dry food and wet food now. For most of his life he wouldn't touch wet food and only would eat the dry.

He didn't start having issues with hairballs and decreased appetite until the end of August when we started getting fleas. He overgroomed himself while we were treating the house and animals. The fleas took a while to completely eliminate but aren't a problem now.

Yes, his kidneys, thyroid, liver, etc. tested just fine. He just seems to have a hard time with hairballs which I know could mean IBD.

I've also thought about maybe an allergy causing inflammation and his problems but I don't know if that would cause back and forth illness.

Have you tried giving regular hairball pills, like vet's best?

He went to the vet again today, a walk in. Once again, he stopped eating and drinking at night and in the morning, even though he drank and ate after throwing up a hairball.

They did more bloodwork and gave him something for pain, nausea and fluids.

I have to wait for the ultrasound, though.

The vet did say something was strange about the way he moved his mouth. June 1st he just had his teeth cleaned and some removed so I don't know why. Any thoughts?

He also has had eggy burps and gas today.
