Hi,

I am fostering a 6-wk-old kitten via a local shelter, and the kitten has been battling coccidia for a few days. The shelter gave me a three day supply of Ponazuril and Albon of which I gave first dose yesterday...and then accidentally left the Ponazuril (which requires refrigeration) out overnight. Today, when it came time to give kitty her medicine, I realized I had left the medication out overnight and ran back to the shelter to pick up fresh doses. Then, after all that, I ended up giving her the unrefrigerated dose anyway by accident because the bags looked identical and I wasn't looking closely enough!

Now I am scared that I've made her sicker. Does anyone know if unrefrigerated Ponazuril spoils and becomes toxic--or merely inert/ineffective?

Thank you.

Thanks for asking. She does not seem to have experienced any ill effects from my mistake so far, and the diarrhea seems to have improved somewhat. So, keeping my fingers crossed...

No problem  with the unrefrigerated Ponazural!  I've done this before myself.  It may not work on the worms but it won't cause her harm.  Even giving her a double dose of the stuff won't hurt!  I hope the diarrhea clears up quickly.  My shelter has started giving Amoxicillin for diarrhea and it's been a miracle drug!

Ponazuril is very effective at treating diarrhea caused by coccidia. You may want to continue with it.
