I've posted other nutrition questions before but figured a new topic was best for this one-  I want to make sure my rapidly growing 3.5 month old kitten is getting enough to eat.   She gets both wet and dry food, and currently is getting one tablespoon dry in the morning, and another tablespoon at night, and in between she gets a quarter of a can of wet food in the morning and another quarter at dinner time (3 oz can).  Sometimes I end up giving her a 3rd tablespoon of dry if shes extra hungry that day, which seems to happen every now and then, which I figure is probably one of her growth spurts but is this enough in general for a kitten her age? and when is it recommended to increase her amount (both overall and per feeding?)  I want to eventually give her more wet than dry when she's big enough to eat a larger quantity at one feeding but since I work during the day,  doing extra smaller feedings is hard to balance out during the week.  Any advice appreciated.

I have three kittens, 5 1/2 months, 3 months and 2 months. A bowel is left out all day with about 1 1/2 cups of dry. Then they get three to four can's of Friskies wet food a day to share. They mostly nibble on the dry as a snack in between but the oldest who has always preferred dry. They need access to food they are rapidly growing. Most members don't believe you can over feed a kitten. I feel the same way.

It's also recommended you feed them twice the amount of food. I dont work but I feed them when I get up and then when my kids get home around 12. I will feed them at dinner time and then sometimes before I go to bed.

Even with all the food I give them they still beg and want human food. For the most part I don't give it to them. I will give them chicken, turkey and beef as long as it's not cooked with garlic or onions. Sassy usually will turn her  nose up at it though. But she will fight you over cheese. I will give her some from time to time. Small amounts though. If you know she is getting enough you can put her in another room while your eating.

Lots of questions about feeding kittens today
See my response to someone else here: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/326429/enough-food-for-a-kitten

Kittens should be fed as much as they want because they need all that food to grow
Your 3.5 month old should be offered some more food. One tablespoon of dry and a quarter of a 3 oz can twice a day isn't enough, IMO.

If you get a programmable time feeder, you can give your kitten small canned food meals throughout the day. I like the Petsafe 5 compartment one. It's perfectly fine to leave canned food out all day. Some people like to freeze canned food into small portions and put the frozen food into the feeder to slowly defrost and stay fresher longer. You can also leave a bowl of maybe a measured cup of dry food out all day for your kitten to snack on when hungry.

LTS3 is exactly right!  Kittens need twice the food of adults to grow for at least their first year.  They should be given all they want and the food should be "kitten" not cat.   I have that same auto feeder and it works great when I am unable to be there for a meal.  A word to the wise:  dry cat food is awful !  It is loaded with carbs.  Cats do not need any carbs; only protein and fat.  I asked a vet why carrots and peas were in commercial food.  He said they put it in for the people. Feeding the cheapest wet food is preferable to dry.  Read here:  catinfo. org.
