Hi!

I took my cat to the vet today and she was diagnosed with a bladder/kidney infection. I thought this was strange because she doesn't have what I thought were the typical symptoms. 2 days ago she lost her appetite completely (she loves to eat). Then she started vomiting. She vomited up a couple leaves from a non toxic Areca Palm plant - so I thought maybe that was the problem, but she continued to vomit throughout the day and was only throwing up water. She also seemed very sluggish, so I took her in.

She has no fever. They tested her blood as well as doing another test - bio(something or other). Bloodwork was all normal. The other test showed a high percentage of something in her urine (maybe?) so the vet concluded it was some kind of bladder or kidney infection. Sorry I don't remember all the test details. Does this seem right? I thought UTI infections in cats caused frequent urination - not vomiting. I'm starting her on antibiotics today - just wanted some extra advice as to whether or not this all sounds right. Thanks for any help!

I have never dealt with bladder or kidney infections with my cats.  Have you let your vet know about the vomiting?  I am wondering if she also has nausea from something.  Did the stopping eating and nausea start right after she ate the plant?  Even though it is no toxic maybe it has given her a tummy ache.  One of my cats started throwing up bile and stopped eating.  My vet gave her a shot for nausea and she felt much better.  She resumed eating within a few hours of the shot.  This may be something else to discuss with your vet.

Hi Catlover, thanks for your reply!

I told the vet when we went in that she was throwing up and not eating, before we left yesterday he gave her a shot to stop the vomiting - which worked, but I've had to feed her with a syringe since because she still has no appetite. I just gave her a second dose of antibiotics this morning, and am worried that she's going to throw it up, although so far so good.

Anybody have any idea how long antibiotics take to kick in usually? I guess it depends. Just hate seeing her in such a sluggish state... :( She's getting betamox palatable drops.

I'm an american expat living in Doha Qatar - and although the vets here seem "fine" I'm sometimes a little nervous about their experience as practitioners.

I'm wondering if maybe the UTI is caused by something else?

I went through a similar problem where my cat got a UTI from being blocked by crystals.  Not saying crystals is the reason for the UTI with your cat, I was using that as an example.  My cat didn't show signs of a UTI either, and for the longest time he didn't even show signs he was even sick other than he had some weird behaviors but I had thought he was just acting out. So maybe there is a bigger problem causing the little problem.
